If my computer does something strange occasionally, I simply reboot and forget about it.

However, if something strange is happening regularly, I don't think it is wise to use a work around or to continue to just close down the program or reboot.

If the solutions on the Legacy web site don't apply, it is sensible to look further afield.

Either you have reached the capacity of your computer system and asking it to do too much or something on your system is failing.

That may be due to some form of malware. Viruses are only one type and many virus checkers do not check for other types of malware.

It may be that the computer memory is flaky.
It may be many things - some serious, some not. Some that threaten your security and privacy, some that don't.

Either way, it's a warning and it's time to give your computer a full health check. If you're still using Windows 98 then it's time to backup everything, reformat and reinstall windows. For close to trouble free computing, you needed to do that every 12 to 18 months. XP is more stable but I still hear my computer technician husband advocating it from time to time. However, more often he finds spyware or trojans are the cause of the problems people are having.

Cathy,

When I regularly suffered from this problem I did a thorough check of my system many times and never found any viruses ( I have always checked for these overnight, every night, anyhow). Nor was there any significant malware on my PC either.

At the time I only had 256MB of RAM which led me to suspect that it was a memory problem even though I seemed to have a reasonable amount available. It also occurred to me that it may have been insufficient Page File, if so there wasn't much I could do about it.

I stopped parking Legacy on the Task Bar and shut it down when not in use and this certainly helped matters. I have a much bigger system now and have no problems - but I still shut it down when not in use.
