In Sourcewriter, the "basic format" is one of the choices under "Medium," i.e. 
is it an online image, a CD, a microfilm, etc.  Yes, I use it for real books 
(hard copies).  I also use it in other situations where I don't think the other 
choices quite fit.  (It has nothing to do with the Basic Source system, as far 
as I can tell).

In the case of books, at least, I have found the "basic format" almost always 
includes the necessary information, or that I could easily modify it to do so 
(e.g. by leaving some fields blank or placing certain data in other fields).  
Can you give an example of what you believe is missing?
