One reason it's nice NOT to have it sorted automatically is if there are
some of the children who you don't have a birth date for, but you know
they are older than some of those who do have a birth date.  In that
case, you want to at least be able to override the chronological
sorting.

Ron,
    You can right click on any of the children's names and select
children's
settings.  Select sort to get them in birth order.  I guess it would be
nice
to have an option where it is done automatically (I don't think there is
such an option), but this hasn't been a hassle for me.
