How about 2 options:
1) Always auto sort by date, unless manually overridden per family - and
allow setting the override by use of tagging.
2) Never auto sort by date.

I asked that exact question the last time I needed to contact someone
within
the company. I also would like to put all of the children in
chronological
order... automatically, not just one family at a time. I was told that
this
option was not offered because often children have no birth dates, and
some
users will manually arrange them in their known order of birth. A
program
that arranges children in birth order would undo the work that these
users
have done.

I still would like the option to sort the children automatically.
Perhaps
there could be a block to check for those certain families that have
been
manually arranged, to exclude them from the sorting.
