There is a move afoot to try to standardize the method of indicating an unknown name. The symbol for this is [--?--]. It can be used for either a missing first name or last name. This method works best for married ladies whose maiden surname is unknown. In Legacy, an entry such as Mrs. Alice (as given), [--?--] (as surname), Boosey (as title suffix), appears in the name list as [--?--]Mrs. Alice Boosey, a clear indicator that her given name is Alice and she is married to a gentleman whose surname is Boosey. When the lady's maiden surname is revealed, the newly discovered maiden surname replaces the symbol and the husband's surname is removed from the title suffix. This method will not do for Legacy users who are preparing for Temple submissions. -- Alice

There is one problem- the author of this plot-out sometimes used only the first nameas a person's last name when he did not know the last name. I assume he did this to avoid having a lot of "Unknown" for the last name. If there are a lot, after a certain point, it does get confusing. How do some of you enter people with unknown names in such a fashion thatthe word "Unknown" is hardly ever used? Anyone have a strategy for this? I'dlove to be able to see a last name, be able to see that it means "unknown"and to whom it applies in most cases. Feel free to write me directly. Thank you.
