Thanks Ed. I've personally only seen message boards die when they were
improperly maintained or not run by professionals and thus, they could
no longer fund it as it grew beyond bandwidth costs. I've also seen them
die when they were overly specific.
What I've mainly seen are Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists vanish in
favor of web forums. I have a heavy background in the audio industry. 10
years ago everyone frequented a few mailing lists and Usenet groups.
Today, 90% of the traffic is spread across a few top web forums that are
drawing far more traffic that either of the other two forums ever got.
