One thing that needs to be factored in regarding this statement is that we're going to get a HIGHLY skewed perspective having this discussion on a mailing list. Mailing list fans are going to populate a mailing list. Web forum fans may not take part in a mailing list. It just wouldn't be very accurate to assume the interest in web forums is equal to stated interest, or lack thereof, of interest stated here. In fact, what I see of web forums is that they tend to appeal to a lot more novice users who find them much easier to manage and frequent than to bother with mailing lists, which many find a bit too technical or "different" to bother with.
