I've been following the Questions on Sources on the
list and find it interesting and useful. I've already
made several false starts with documenting sources, and
I've got to settle on something concrete. My
granddaughter has given me hope that she'll take over
this project when it comes time for me to pass it on.
But she is young and busy and I know my files, etc.
will sit in her attic/basement/garage until she reaches
a stage in life that allows her the luxury of further
pursuing genealogy. So I'm trying to organize and
consolidate my files and data with her in mind.
Looking to the future, my goal is to pass on CDs or
DVDs (or whatever the latest media is at the time) with
the LEGACY program, main database, and supporting
digital files of sources. In addition I'll pass on all
the original documents in my possession and a hardcopy
of the book that LEGACY produces for each of the family
lines.
My files are bloated with far too many paper
photocopies of such things as CENSUS records that can
now easily be accessed on the internet or digitized on
disk. I want to dispose of the unnecessary paper in
the file drawers and keep only those documents that
can't easily be found elsewhere.
So my most pressing problems now is to settle on a
document file naming convention that will be useful to
both the next custodian of this database and future
versions of LEGACY. Over the years, I was not
consistent in naming files and used whatever struck my
fancy at the time and now I need to rework the files.
I'm starting with the hundreds of CENSUS files that
I've collected. I was horrified to learn on the web
that a file name that has "spaces" in the name may not
be readable to all computer systems. That same article
claimed that the underscore __ was the character to use
as a separator in file names.
So I'm now in the process of renaming files where I
used "spaces" and "dashes":
C://Program Files/Legacy/images/census/
Keating_1900_James_LA.jpg
Keating_1910_James_LA.jpg
Keating_1920_James_GA.jpg
Keating_1930_James_MD.jpg
Fortunately, when Legacy can't find a file, it will
prompt you for a new name. It's a pain, but seems to
be working.
QUESTION: Am I on the right track? Was the article
correct regarding the use of the underscore "_"? Is it
the proper spacer to use for LEGACY? Please shoot my
method down before I get much further if you have a
better method.
