It can be difficult debugging things with non autodesk generated 3ds
files. Generally, all meshes atleast have a root node. You may want
to try keyframing the position and rotation of your model at frame
zero...However, I don't think it should matter.

Regarding the nodes and meshes(correct my if i'm wrong):
A mesh is a surface, made up of polygons.
A node is a mesh with some extra properties(each node belongs to a mesh),
and it can have parent and child nodes.
Ok, that makes sense.
I think the problem is that my 3D designing app of choice (Sketchup)
is exporting
extremely suspect 3DS files that don't really adhere to the same standards -
I've noticed a few 'UNKNOWN CHUNKS' in the dump output too. It's going to take
a bit of tweaking to get it all right.
