In what aspect is that more sane than '/bin/sh --login'  ?

But the autologin patch is really neat and flexible indeed.

PS With modern z/VM the class C version of SEND can do even without
being secondary console. If something breaks you have a hard time
telling who did it if you leave root logged on there. YMMV
