Right, you can use nodeps to force an install, but if the original packages are 
dependent on things like specific level shared libraries, you might find they don't 
work quite right after.

You could have done rpm --erase --nodeps to remove mysql without removing the 
dependent packages.

You could also take the spec file from the old version of mysql and use it to build a 
new package for the new mysql.  Possibly difficult, but easier than starting from 
scratch.
