I love the sheriff in Arizona (anyone know if he's still there?) that setup
prisons as bivouac tents, food is bologna sandwiches, and the underwear is
pink (so they don't steal it when released, which they did). They do their
work, and don't get TVs, weight sets, etc.
I saw him on a talk show a few years ago where people said he was being cruel
and that noone would stand for it.. to which he asked, "Then how come I've
been reelected several times since starting this program?"

Well, if I may slip briefly into the role of advocatus diaboli for a
moment, the NEA is an organization that:
1) uses its influence to oppose the privatization of public education in
the United States
http://www.nea.org/aboutnea/faq.html
2) subjects all of its members to a kind of secret code and collective
discipline
http://www.nea.org/aboutnea/code.html
3) places emphasis on education not just in the USA, but internationally
http://www.nea.org/aboutnea/interntl.html
and:
4) advocates the formation of, and supports the existence of, teachers'
unions anywhere and everywhere within the US public school system
http://www.nea.org/newunion/
-- Now, although I have no doubt whatsoever that Mr. Kulkis will
triumphantly proclaim his standard 'QED' at this point, whether any of
this actually weakens the US and the public education system here; whether
it qualifies as treason or as a vast Marxist-leftist conspiracy, and etc.,
in reality, is best left as an exercise for the reader... :-|
If nothing else, readers will at least have these pointers to the NEA Web
site in order to judge for themselves, instead of being constrained to
watch nothing but a few people's rhetorical tap-dancing skills on Usenet.

Interesting...

There are certain things which are appropriate to be taught in K-12
classes, and there are other subjects which are NOT appropriate
for K-12 students.
In the case of the two books listed above, they were both meant
for K/1/2 - graders.
Please tell me exactly WHAT purpose is served by teaching 6-year olds
about human sexuality (heterosexual or homosexual), other than
propagandizing them to engage in such before they are ready.

Dev. Studio probably ranks along with IE5 and MS Office as another huge
clump of software that needlessly overwrites critical system files.
Fortunately, when I do PC programming I can use Delphi (first choice) or C++
Builder (if I need to use C/C++). I gather that Dev. Studio has better
tools for people who do PC programming full-time, and it is better for
low-level stuff like device drivers, but other than that I find Borland's
tools much faster and easier to work with.

The trouble with IE5 is that you can't uninstall it - any attempt leaves
bits behind, and it is precisely these bits that mess up the stability of
the system.

Here's today's Malloy digest. Notice how he's ignored the evidence
for the fact that he likes to "hear" himself, and keeps talking about
how I've allegedly ignored his evidence, yet he hasn't presented any
(indeed, he's so intent on using "parrot" mode that he's made several
ridiculous claims). He's also ignored the evidence for his reading
comprehension problem (and uses "parrot" mode to talk about some
nonexistent evidence for my alleged reading comprehension problem).
Nor did he explain why he's ignored Slava's question.

Malloy likes to hear himself. The evidence:

"Where does he say anything about clergy, Tholen?"

And the question of Slava's that he continues to ignore:

No, I'm not. I'm just saying if you kick them out of school they're most
likely going to get themselves thrown in jail sooner or later. Probably
sooner.

I've never understood this idea of hiding certain things from kids. In
my experience, the kids who are kept isolated from such aspects of the
real world for the longest are the ones who have the hardest time
dealing with reality when they're finally exposed to some of it.
