Ok,

I get the problem. But I have one more question: why in God's name would
an admin give out the root password to users on an NFS network?
Disregarding root exploits, a client should always be run as a normal
user right?
This is what set me wondering lately, as NIS shares every
password except root, how would you do remote administration of client
machines?
Sorry for the two answers in the same thread, but my ISP dropped my
original post, so my threading is all messed up.

That exploits an existing trait. It does not alter a component of their
identity in any way.

Ask the average user if they think it is alright to borrow software off a
mate, most people will think it is pretty normal. Shit, back in the 1980s
when the Amiga was launched people used to swap, borrow and trade software,
and noboday saw it as illegal. Also, most companies have an agreement with
Microsoft that allows them to let their employees install Office and
Windows at home. As for you comment regarding Linux software, 90% of
cases, it is marketed poorly, as if they don't want to admit they have a
Linux product. It pretty clear, esp. after the Adobe Framemaker debarkle,
shit, even I didn't know that was happening. If these companies want
people to rally behind Linux and their Linux apps the have to market not
only to the computer nerds, but to the populous as well. Most users don't
buy computer magazines. If they started advertising on television and in
mainstream papers, then it would grab the attention of the populous.
Something even I can admint that Microsoft is good at, it appeals to all
areas of society, nerds and lusers alike. Intel is another name that comes
to mind that advertises during prime time. Linux based companies need to
do this to gain acceptance, but unfortunately many of these companies are
run by socially impotant CEO's who wouldn't know how to communicate with
the populous if their lives depended on it.

Yup. You could put any protocol in there, such as

gopher://...

that ther server would reply to and give you the GIF on.

gif.org just refers to the site containing the GIF.

Gopher servers do actually still exist in places (such as quux.org).

Eazel had an interesting idea, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working out how
they wanted it to. When I installed the final Nautilus it was such a dissapointment
that I actually switched to KDE.

Yes, but that was their plan all along. They said they'd lose money up until around
now and despite the slowing of the market they've managed to stick to their plan.

That's more like market consolidation than anything else. After all, there were
simply too many Linux distros, something had to give eventually.

I did, and I wouldn't trust Microsoft either. If Microsoft can't even keep
their house in order (aka FunLove virus), then how on earth can I trust
them with my work? If Microsoft released Microsoft Office via the web using
.net, I would go for it, however, on one condition, I expect 24/7/365
uptime, and if there is any downtime, I expect atleast $100 for every
minute I cannot access my data. If my data is corrupted in anyway, because
of hackers, crackers etc. I expect a minimum compensation of $10,000.

Not a south westers suburb. I was refering to Kingston Upon Thames.

Refering to round where I live. You then made a comment relating to this:

The `Which is why' phrase presumably refering to the comment I made. I
simply don't understand the comment you made. Care to explain?

I don't mind helping countries/people with a hand-up, but not a hand out,
like the welfare system. With Linux, it allows countries to empower
themselves to improve the situation without the undignified need to rush to
the US for aid. Linux will help countries help themselves. It is also
quite humorous to see how popular Linux has become in India. Microsoft has
largely ignored it by not support the various Idian Languages. Linux
however, can be localised by a local company/volunteers, thus, more people
are introduced to Linux. If this situation is duplicated around the world,
the number of developers will steadily increase, and as a result, even more
software will become available for the masses.

That's a property of the internet. The www is a combination of http and
