You only need these if you have more than one copy of diald running (for more
   than one dialup link). If you only have one modem, it appears you don't need to
   identify any ethertap interfaces in conf.modules.

My experience was that with a single diald, if I didn't define the tap
modules in conf.modules I got a rash of messages complaining about
being unable to find them when diald started up, after which
everything was OK (except for the problem with an immediate hangup,
which I still have).

With the entries, the annoying messages go away.
