I agree that RPMs should not overwrite config files.  From my
experience, they merely rename the previous version so it should be
possible to fix it manually.

The RPM may not have them. 

Do 
        rpm -ql diald 
to see what files are included.

If they aren't included, you could easily create them manually.  Look at
pppd's connect script for ideas.  They are quite similar.
The conf file, of course, depends on what your setup.
