I think this is a great idea and have already started researching to
create a ham type distro, all I lack is time! :) As far as the scsi,
development, ISDN stuff being removed, that's stuff I use! Actually,
most of the standard Slackware distro I use - can't stand RH, so that's
another dilemma right there. It wouldn't be too hard to precompile
kernels for sound modem, etc but then there are hams like me, that
always compile a new kernel, with just the needed modules, etc and
nothing more, even on a brand new install. That would require all the
development stuff to be installed. So, no matter what happens, you end
up with a distro that is pretty much like all the rest. After giving
this alot of thought, it would be easier to dump the current docs,
HAM-Howto and AX25, and write a new set for the current tools, and
specialties like *NOS, and other ham software, etc. How come the docs
are so out of date, and if the maintainer doesn't have the time, why not
pass the tourch?? Better organization of what's already out there would
make it easier for hams new to Linux get a grip with it. Personally, all
this noise of 'if Linux was easier then Windoze' really gets me going.
If you want DOS/Win311Win95/98/NT then run it - if you want Linux then
run it, it's your choice.
