Eprom programmers are very easy to find. Anyone serious about packet
networking would have one in his tool bag as standard equipment... Many of
the US mailorder houses have them... Jameco, JDR, etc, comes to mind. They are
not very expensive either...I have an eprom programmer in one of my hamshack
computers. I've had it for many years. Mine was $125 in the late 80's. The
prices for a single place eprom programmer for the 27x series eproms seems to
have remained relatively low since I purchased mine.
If a person does not care to purchase their own eprom programmer, I am sure
that arrangements could be made with someone to get your 27x series eproms
programmed without too much pain. It would simply be a matter of sending your
customized object code and appropriate eprom type to the individual in
question, or making arrangements for the person doing the programming to
provide the eprom and ship it out to you....
I would not let the lack of an eprom programmer slow down the possibility of
setting up standalone packet nodes for use as APRS digipeaters or TCPIP
routers.
I may be willing to provide a limited eprom programming service for
construction of TheNet X1JR4 or similar packet nodes, if anyone would be
interested. I don't want to make that a full time job as I do have many other
obligations besides amateur radio, however I would entertain any reasonable
requests if they should surface. Ideally, it would be best if someone in your
region could be utilized, however finding nobody to do it for you, I would
most likely be willing to help.
