I know this won't answer your question, but I just thought I'd mention
that according to the FAQ on the ESS Web site, the Solo-1 is SoundBlaster
and SoundBlasterPro compatible. So, according to the docs, any kernel which
supports PCI SB compatible cards should support the ESS Solo-1 cards. Have
you had any success getting it to be recognized as a SB card ?
Unfortunately, I haven't had any success. I have a ASUS P5A with on-board
ESS Solo-1, and I'm using 2.0.32. :-(

Interesting note: the ASUS Web site says the on-board ESS Solo-1 audio
is SoundBlaster16 compatible.

don't be overwhelmed ;-)

get 'bttv-0.5.22.tar.gz' and build/install it.

inside the apps/XTV/ dir (in that bttv kit), the program 'xtvscreen' should be
enough to get you by.

running the 2.0.x kernel, you need nothing special (no rebuilds).

inside the driver/ dir (bttv kit), you run MAKEDEV and ./update.

that seemed to be enough for me...

my card is the dbx stereo unit. the sound output works just fine.

I don't believe the driver -cares- about the audio; once you tune a station,
it either comes in stereo or it doesn't. (I might be wrong, but I didn't do
anything special to configure the stereo output).

and my card does not have the FM tuner kit - just the tv audio stuff.

you -are- trying to test your tuner by connecting the stereo output plug to a
real analog preamp (eg, home stereo), right? I didn't even bother using a
soundcard, etc, etc - I just connected the 1/8" stereo jack to my preamp in
and it 'just plain worked'.

Howdy.

I've hit a wall on setting this thing up that I cannot, for the life of
me, understand.
Deja News doesn't have any solution so I figured I'd post here:

Problem:

Cant get the sound card to work. Well, it will play sounds that are
under a second just fine,
but when I try to play any sound longer than that, it just clips them at
about a second every time.
It plays cd's fine though. After I play the sounds I get a bunch of
these in /var/log/messages:

Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?

Now, I know what you are thinking, "the idiot has conflicting
irq/dma/ioports." Well I don't think so.
I've tried every arrangements of irq/dma/ioports I could think of, and
have made sure before hand
that they were not used. I dual boot to Windows and it works there, so
I know it's not a hardware problem.
I even implemented the Windows io/irq/dma information exactly in linux
and it doesn't work.

System:

I'm running a Sager 9800,
RedHat 5.2
linux 2.2.0 kernel (But I repeated this problem on the 2.0.36 kernel
too).

Eric,

The bad news is this: The LJ3100 is a "host-based" or Windows only printer.
That accounts for the CPU spike. I will barely even working on a
peer-to-peer 95 network. The driver wants to communicate bi-directionally
with the printer.

Sad but true.

Tried it but no luck. In fact, now the entire linux partitions has gone bonkers.
So this timeI tried another PA2013 and the result is the same. (signal 7 during
install, kernel compile
freezing the computer, etc etc)

At this point I am beginning to suspect the ram myself. Actually, I am going to
try 66Mhz bustsetting for it next. And I am still waiting for new ram to arrive.
It is making me impatient.

Well - I run RedHat 5.2 on a 386DX40 with 8 megabytes, 120 Meg HD. and the
full wax, including modules takes at least 8 or 9. Therefore you muse be
using a supercharged 386 or a earlier version of linux with a smaller kernel
:-)

(I like the idea of a supercharged 386 myself)

I'm using a ABIT BH6 and a C300 oc'd to 450.

Linux has been running great :) Can't say the same for my Win98 partition
though :)

When you compile(d) your kernel, you need to enable the AWE support in
the low-level sound drivers section. If you are using make xconfig, and
are in the sound driver section, next menu is the one you want, and it
is right at top. enable low level sound, then enable awe32 support.
Works fine after that (at least for me), YMMV.

If making the partition with the linux fdisk and setting it active did
not let the drive boot, then it has other things wrong with it.
The dos and win95/98 fdisk also clear several sectors at the beginning
of the partition when you use it to create a partition.
If you use the linux fdisk, and the make partition the same type that
it was before, ( I can't remember what the hex # for that is.), and
set it active, that about as close as you are going to get.
If you have since created a partition with the dos win95/98 fdisk,
then your file allocation tables are probably also screwed.
If its important, get tiramisu.

Subject: Printer recommendations?

Can anyone help me in a choice of printer for Linux? Basic choices are
between:-

HP Deskjet 420L, 670C or
Epson Stylus 440, 640.

The printer will be used for both graphics and text, though text is more
important. Cost of running is something I'd like to hear about.
Also just wondered if either used WinDrivers to access the high-quality
print mode... I seem to remember a review of the stylus which mentioned
a specific "window-ness"

Any help appreciated.
Billy.

hello world
===============

I know that these suckin' winmodems are not usable under linux and this
makes me sad, I feel like I've been crooked by 3com when buyin' mine......

    Today's questions are the following:

1) is there really no way to use window's winmodem drivers under linux (I
don't know how but code exists under windows, linux must be able to run it
in any way)

2) challenge: write linux drivers for these modems (i am not a programmer,
therefore i don't know how to do) in order to use them with linux

3) and what about 'Wine' has anyone succeeded in running winmodem using
wine???? I personally never tried but why not??

any comments welcome
