Ok, thanks for the emails from several of y'all. I've made progress,
but am not there yet. I have downloaded and installed the latest
PCMCIA drivers, and am using the tulip driver for this card. Now when
I insert the card, here's the output:

Obviously, no etho interface comes up. cardctl ident corectly
identifies the card.

And, I modified /etc/pcmcia/config so that the "Linksys Etherfast 10/100

Ideas anyone? As usual, your help is appreciated.

I have a PC with two hard disks: 4.5 GB SCSI and 10.1 GB IDE. What I
would like to
do is set up NT, Linux and Solaris 7 so that they could be switched with
minimum effort.

I have managed to set up NT and Linux (RedHat 5.2) on the SCSI disk and
they both
work OK - even updated the Linux kernel to 2.2.3... The problem seems to
come when
adding Solaris on the IDE disk: Linux stops at something like
"checking the partitions...
hda: "

Does this come from the partition ID codes since the Solaris
partition is marked by
id of #$82, decimal 130 the same as Linux Swap? The only way so far to
get the Linux
part up - and still have the IDE disk visible - is to change the
partition ID of the IDE's
Solaris partition.
I have - of course - not told Linux to use the 2GB Solaris partition
as swap. Does it
decide by itself somehow? Or is it a problem with the disk size being
over 8GB? It does
stall on both the original 2.0.36.something kernel of the RedHat 5.2 AND
the newer
2.2.3 kernel - which (I think) has support for UFS partitions compiled
in.

    What's wrong?

I asked Creamware about Linux support for the Pulsar card, and they
said there is no driver for the card at the moment but they are
working on drivers both for Linux and BeOS. Should be ready early next
year according to the tech support guy who replied. I understood they
will bundle some of their software for both these platforms. The
Creamware drivers referred to in earlier posts, are those from third
party suppliers?

As to software availability for Linux: There is quite a lot out there,
mostly freeware (in good Linux spirit). Much of it is developed by
independent composers and academic institutions for
experimental/computer music and such. As an earlier poster
recommended, check out http://sound.lovebead.com/

If you want commercial software let the developers know. They often do
listen to potential customers' requests, and now that Linux is gaining
great popularity in the audio world (see articles in Studio Sound,
Keyboard Magazine and Linux Journal) and in general, they see
potential for a bigger market. I asked Syntrillium a few weeks ago,
and they say they are planning a version of Cool Edit Pro for Linux.
It will be late next year at the earliest, though. If enough people
keep asking I think we will see more of the commercial packages on
Linux in the near future. And who wouldn't want to run their favorite
audio apps on a stable, fast and efficient operating system when
studio time and reliability are of great concern?

Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 10:59:55 +0100

Hi Everyone Again,

previous week i've asked into these newsgroups about a problem
i had in using LBA on a WD 28400R 8.4 Gb drive on a AsusTx97.
My problem was the bios didn't want to use the LBA setting of
(1027,255,63) and jumped back to <16383,16,63> which does
not leave much space for dos/windows and requires
trickery for booting linux.

thanks to Roland van Beek its working as i initial planned.

The fix:

i updated my bios to the latest beta version, i'm not
sure if it played a role, cause initial it didn't help
a bit but beta 112-1 for the TX97 (only) hasn't left
me down.

Probably this did the trick:
backup everything from the drive you want to keep, and
overwrite the first sector of the disk with '0', set the
bios, and reinstall. Now my bios uses the desired setting.

I received some mail from various people having the same
problem or having dealt with it (thanks), therefore i
crosspost (sorry about that) this solution to these ng's,
which i hope can help others having this problem or
thinking of adding a new harddisk.

just for the safe side, this fixed worked in my situation
i'm not sure for which others it might apply. Also be
extreemly careful when applying (no margin for error, in
a multi disk system).

Regards

Ton.

I use ATI Xpert 98 8MB. Works out of te box. First with 3.3.2, now
with 3.3.3.1. All modes I tried to set up work fine. This includes
800x600, 1024x768, 1152x9?? and 1280x1024. Right now they are all
set up to work at 16bpp. I'm not sure if I tried 24bpp. I certainly
run the config. programs at 640x480x8bpp.

My current working mode is 1280x1024x16 at 100Hz. Lower refersh
rates (75,85,90) worked as well. No problems with anything I tried.
finally, I moved to Metrolink X server at such settings and it
continues to work just fine.

I think you will need to upgrade your kernel to the 2.2.x series to gey
this card
working. I can't find any trace of it in the documentation to 2.0.36,
but there is
both documentation and a config option for it in the 2.2.0 sources.

Check out the exact card model and see www.xfree.org compatibility
lists.
It may be a good ideay to upgrade X to 3.3.3.1 (obtainable from
ftp.redhat.com in RPM format).

X also prints out a bunch of messages. Can you quote them here?
A misconfigured mouse will also cause X not to start.

All of the RPM's of one version (latest available in the updates dir
at ftp.redhat.com or in libc6 dir contrib.redhat.com) will be a safe
bet. I can do it with my T1 connection, but you may not want to do
the same. You will need:
XFree86-VGA16-3.3.3.1-1 <- the basic X server (needed for
setup)
XFree86-libs-3.3.3.1-1 <- libraries
XFree86-SVGA-3.3.3.1-1 <- your X server
XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.3.1-1 <- setup program
XFree86-100dpi-fonts-3.3.3.1-1 <- fonts
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3.1-1 <- more fonts
XFree86-devel-3.3.3.1-1 <- header files, etc.
XFree86-3.3.3.1-1 <- common base files

Of those, the XFree86-devel-3.3.3.1-1 is not necessary (strictly
speaking) to run X but you'll need it to compile anything for X.
You may also wish to download other font packages (ISO-8859-*).

Hope this helps,

Yes. You should be able to use the uniprint drivers to
intercept StarOffice's postscript output to convert it to
something the printer understands and feed it to the printer
queue. I use Star Office with my ESC600 and it works fine
this way.

My PC came with one fitted, and it works fine under Linux, as long as
the kernel is compiled with IDE/ATAPI Floppy support. You don't need
any of
the SCSI drivers, and Linux behaves just as if it was another IDE hard
drive: mine is /dev/hdd4, because it's on the secondary slave connector.

I also wondered why all the docs go on about SCSI/parallel zip drives,
but don't mention IDE. I think it's because IDE zip drives are more
likely to work without tweaking. Unless I was just first-time lucky.

Kay,

I think Corel WordPerfect or StarOffice will write files in Winword
format. I used to do a lot of translation work and I mainly used
WordPerfect and I always just saved in MS Word format and there was
never problem. Even with fairly complex documents.
