As far as linux distros are concerned there isn't much of a difference
among them, atleast not like there is a difference between say
windows Me and Windows NT. 

*All* of them distros can do *everything*, with varying degrees of
pain on user's part.

i suggest you choose anyone and stick with it (unless ofcourse you
have some really good reasons to switch).

FreeBSD is *very* widely used. Yahoo uses it, and legend has it that
so did hotmail once upon a time.
