In Mandrake Kde depends on GTK? i don't know i haven't installed
Kde/gnome for a longtime now...
But you know what this sounds like to me... If Coca-Cola had a Pepsi
dependency, rofl :)
Ofcourse i hope Slackware works out for you. i couldn't lay my hands
on a recent slackware release so switched to Debian out of necessity and since i don't
need any bleeding edge stuff (like kde in your case) i am pretty okay
with debian.
Another satisfaction i have about using Debian is becuase of the
whole gnu/fsf politics bit. Atleast Debian is going to be stable last i heard
mandrake was winding up. Slackware have only one cd available for dl.
And about FreeBSD, hush i won't say much about it. i got an offlist
message telling me it was OT here :)

Ofcourse, that's life, you trade in one set of complications for a
different one :)
