I run win98 on a K6-200 currently, and I find that it's notoriously flaky
when dust and such accumulate on the heat sink, forming an insulating
layer. This results in intermittent, increasingly frequent crashes,
especially when using a Java application on either Netscape or IE4.

A Matrox M3D 3d card (in tandem with an S3 virge with 4Mb) also suffered
from overheating errors in this box. I remedied this error by removing all
card slot tabs for unused slots and separating the M3D and S3 by two
slots. This may exacerbate dust accumulation, I'm afraid.

Cleaning it off with a Q-Tip makes it run much better. I still wouldn't
call it stable, but that's possibly much more win98's fault than mine.

When running linux on that box I used to get errors of the aforementioned
type after so long, or halts while in X. Needless to say, I don't run
Linux on it any more (a P90 overclocked to 100, w/48Mb RAM and a bunch of
old hard drives - the product of cannibalism, in other words - runs quite
well and reliably) because of this reliability issue.

Hi!
I'm using samba 2.0 and can't connect. I'm always getting a:

Why? I did allow guest accounts.

I don't know about all of them, but it handles many of them correctly.
I've used "cp -dpR" to copy large directories containing special files. It
seems to handle hardlinks and (relative) symlinks correctly.
On the other hand, it doesn't seem to copy the ext2 fs attributes.

I'm surprised tar won't do it, though.

Apart from the occasional memory error, or a rogue NLM which hangs the

Would this count point to an error somewhere or is the problem likely
to be elsewhere.

I removed my Netgear FA310TX NIC from my Redhat 5.2 machine to test it
in another system. I never booted up the linux machine before I put the
card back in, so Linux shouldnt know that it was ever taken out.
However, I didn't put the exact same card back into the system (that one
got shipped out to one of our sites). I put a newer one in that is the
exact same model.

I get connection lights on my hub and on the card, but Linux makes no
use of the card.

Any ideas? I am still a newbie, but that machine has my mySQL test
server on it, so I need it badly !

I am having a problem with Netscape 4.5. I recently began running my
PPP sessions from my user account (I was previously using root) on my RH
5.2 box. I copied all the ~/.netscape files to my home directory,
changed ownership, and burned the cache files.

Whenever I start up Netscape, after loading my home page and checking
mail, I get a window that says "Error saving bookmarks file" (or
something like that). This sounds like a permissions issue or a
corrupted file. However, I renamed my existing file so Netscape
wouldn't find it when I started it up. I still get the same error.

Any ideas?

BEST ADVICE FOR NEWBIE TO LINUX:

Use joe, it is a wordstar-like text editor that is simple to use.
Just type: joe file.txt or whatever the name of the file is.

Go for the other "major learning curve crap" such as VI and EMACS
after you are comfortable with Linux.

There are tons of word processors out there for Linux, the one I like for
use under X is cooledit. Although I never use it. I know, that doesn't make
sense. But I like joe so well I just have it in one of my X menus with the
command:

xterm -e joe

And that brings up joe in an xterm ready for use.

Good luck

I have advice for you guys: get a life.

Every problem that Windows has is also evident in _all_ other breeds of
operating systems.

Every problem with "bloat" is also evident in _all_ other breeds of
operating systems _and_ applications. But most people would not know this
because they've used two operating systems: Windows and Linux. I've been
using operating systems of all types for many years now - the problem is not
Microsoft-specific. The problem is "programming-in-general" specific.

Understand this guys - "bloat" is a relative term. Perhaps most of you
don't appreciate the "additional" features. For you I would say steer clear
of any software made nowadays. Otherwise - your opinion is merely your
own - and I would advise you to substantiate your evidence with clear
examples.

This argument has turned to nonsense as all people really want to do is bash
Microsoft - not address the true problem - the lack of discipline by
programmers, Microsoft and otherwise, to produce lean code.

Sure, try CAD. But that just runs a command, so if the system is truely

That may be somewhat more than you wanted to know.

If you're using Redhat you can get an overview of the filesystem in the
manual:

http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/RHL-5.2-Manual/install-guide/manual/

To see what files are in a package foo you can use

rpm -ql foo

To see what package a file bar belongs to use

rpm -qf bar

Okay, my first reply only addressed getting drew's mail in
nancy's spool. For all of what you want, you'll have to
muck about with sendmail. You'll need the GNU m4 package
installed, which slackware calls 'm4,' and the sendmail config
package, which slackware calls 'smailcfg' installed in
/usr/src/sendmail.

You'll also have to recompile nmh with
 #define REALLYDUMB  1
in config.h, or it will rewrite the addresses badly.
Also configure to use sendmail instead of smtp by setting
 #undef SMTPMTS
 #define SENDMTS 1
you shouldn't have to mess with any non-default hostnames or servers
in nmh config or mts.conf.

Okay, if you haven't lost me yet, go into /usr/src/sendmail/cf/cf
where the sendmail config files are, and create a myhost.mc file,
You'll have to change MASQUERADE_AS to your isp domain,
and MASQUERADE_DOMAIN to what your domain at home is called.

----/usr/src/sendmail/cf/cf/myhost.mc----------------
divert(-1)
#
#
# This is the prototype file for a configuration that supports
# basic SMTP connections via TCP, masquerading domain and users.

divert(0)dnl
include(`../m4/cf.m4')
VERSIONID(`linux for for my config')dnl
OSTYPE(linux)
FEATURE(nouucp)dnl
FEATURE(masquerade_entire_domain)
MASQUERADE_AS(ISPdomain.com)
MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(local.net)
FEATURE(masquerade_envelope)
FEATURE(genericstable, hash /etc/genericstable)
GENERICS_DOMAIN_FILE(/etc/generichost)
MAILER(local)dnl
MAILER(smtp)dnl

=========end of file, don't use this line ====================

from /usr/src/sendmail/cf/cf you'll run

m4 ../m4/cf.m4 myhost.mc > myhost.cf

Move /etc/sendmail.cf to /etc/sendmail.old (in case you screw up and
need it back), and copy myhost.cf to /etc/sendmail.cf

create an /etc/generichost file, and put in the names your
machine goes by, mine has:
 localhost
 bozo
 bozo.local.net

To get the pop to go into the right users mail spool
create an /etc/genericstable file, and put in the linux username
followed by the pop address to map it to. To use your example:

 nancy [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then (from /etc) do a "makemap hash genericstable < genericstable "

Kill and restart your sendmail's process-id with kill -HUP

I think that should do it, I don't think I've left anything out.
Clear as mud?
