Indeed. I'm sure there must be a few out there. However, pretty much
everybody codes for X. It's become the de facto standard for *nix
platforms.
Keep in mind that you can drastically change the look and feel of the
interface depending on the window manager you use. Fvwm has a
configuration that looks an awful lot like Win98, or you can go with
Gnome or KDE. I use LessTif myself. Or, you can play with the X and Xt
libraries and write your own window manager. The same batch of
applications will run in all these different environment. (Well, I think
Gnome provides a bit of functionality that the others ignore, IIRC.)

How in the world do you make Netscape 4.7 to list ONLY the UNREAD
message headers???
in 3.5 Gold you had a selection in a pull doewn menu> "Show only unread
messages". That does not exist anymore. Now you ahve "Disk Space" under
preferences.
So, how do you cause ONLY UNREAD message headers to be listed????

Use smbmount. It's part of the Samba package. Unfortunately, its syntax
and options have changed two or three times from 2.0 to 2.06. With the
more recent versions, the following should work:
smbmount //ntboxname/ntsharename /linux/path/to/nt/mount/point
You'll be prompted for a password. You may need to configure your Samba
options (like the workgroup name) in /etc/smb.conf, /etc/samba/smb.conf,
or some similar file, or enter overriding options on the smbmount command
line.

I have a Web/mail/FTP server that I would like to mirror for redundancy.
What is the best way to do this? It doesn't have to be mirrored real-time
but I want it to be updated every 24 hours minimum.
I am running Linux Slackware on kernel 2.2.10. I already have two
identically configured machines.

Indeed.
For instance, after the French revolution came Napoleon.
This was neither an unalloyed benefit nor an unalloyed bad thing;
Napoleon had some "aspects of enlightenment" so that whilst there was
"tyranny," there was also established a code of law that is still used
to this day.
But to take things more directly back to the times of the revolutions,
there was great bloodshed and even corruption amongst those that
established the revolutions.
>> This is a kind of >Alliance vs. Empire struggle.
>
>Put your light saber down, buddy. The only "struggle" is that to offer
>good quality software to the users.
Indeed.
And even if we go along with the "Star Wars" characterization, it's
not obvious that when the Rebel Alliance wins, that everything turns
into hugs and kisses for everyone. [Which is why I consider Dune to
be *great* literature, and Star Wars to be silly fantasy.
<http://www.kithrup.com/brin/starwars.html> explains the problems with
Star Wars further...]
The Rebel Alliance is left with picking up the pieces of a political
economy, including dealing with:
a) Establishing a just judiciary across the Alliance;
b) Establishing trade agreements between worlds;
c) Establishing policies that may involve tax powers, which might mean
that they have to board smugglers' vessels to collect import duties
or to interdict transport of illicit goods;
d) Establishing a "peace time" military;
None of which are trivial matters, and *all* of which would involve
establishing policies that people formerly downtrodden by the former
regime will find disquietingly similar to what they used to have.
[Timothy Zahn's series "Heir to the Empire," "Dark Force Rising," and
"The Last Command" provide a politically-plausible aftermath to the
destruction of the Imperial Emperor...]
Bringing this back from "Sci-Fi" to relevance, in a "world where Open
Source Is King," there would be a *need* for organizations and
political structures that are disturbingly similar to what was true in
the "bad old days" of Microsoft.

There is an ext2resize package. You can also use parted-boot
if you know how to use a boot disk. Both of these can mess up your
installation beyond repair if you do the wrong thing.

i believe rsync will do this. if you can't find anything better, i suppose

I don't have an experience with servers and backplane hardwares, but
what I can help you is you'd better bug DELL more strongly. In my
opinion it's DELL's responsibility if they decide to load Linux with the
possibly unsupported hardware. Redhat is a mere packager so that they
have limited knowledge of all available hardware configuration. Linux is
still struggling with Ultra 66 EIDE... It's my two penny thought.
Hope somebody with more experience with your hardware can answer better.
Cheers.

Both good suggestions! Unfortunately neither worked...
mtools: Good looking software. Hadn't thought of it. Tried it, I like the
options, and it works for normal 2-sided DOS diskettes of assorted
varieties, but SINGLE-sided, no go. "Sector too big". Of course it's not,
since DOS1.1 diskettes use a 512 byte sector just like other versions, but
perhaps it's trying to check sectors on the *unformatted* side of the disk.
"devices.txt" and creating the appropriate /dev/fd*: Sounds great, but in
checking out devices.txt, on both RH5.1 and RH6.1, it lists numerous
available formats, none of them SINGLE sided. I need one that would be
effectively H180, i.e. using a 1.2MB floppy drive to read a 180K diskette
(single sided, double density).
Still looking for help on this...
Thanks!

I believe these are some sort of pseudo terminals associated with
terminal windows. pts is a subdirectory of /dev and 0, 1,2,etc
seem to be character devices in that subdirectory. My last
shows me logged in repeatedly at such terminals. When I su
to root and create a new xterm as root, I find root logged in
at such a terminal. Has someone been sitting at the console

If you didn't skip ghostscript installation, it should be integrated
with printtool. Try to select cj550c filter. At least it works with HP

According to the manual I have for DOS 4.01, the w command in debug has
the syntax
W[address [drive: record record]]
I think it knows what has to be written, since it ought to be the filename
given when one starts debug, e.g.
debug foo.bar
or else one can select the name using the N command in debug. They say
that if you simply use the W command with an address, assuming you haven't
done anything to chance the BX and CX registers, then the file is written
beginning at that address.
What address on the disk is the beginning of the bot sector? According
to my ancient copy of Norton's book Programmer's Guide to the IBM PC
(1985), on p.112, one examines the boot record in debug by executing, e.g.,
DEBUG
L 0 0 0 1 ; load first sector
U 0 L 2 ; unassemble and list first and second bytes
U 2E ; unassemble and list all bytes form 2E on
The L command has the same syntax as the W command. I think L 0 0 0 1
means load the stuff from record 0 0 to record 0 1 into memory. That
suggests to me that the sequence to write the file foo.bar to the boot
record is:
debug foo.bar
w0000
but I really don't understand the syntax.
Is that correct? How badly can I screw up the disk if I get it wrong?

Check the site http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html to see what
kind of modem yours is and if it works under Linux.
Cheers.
