It appears that getting gnome to my linux box involves downloading close to
a dozen different packages and libraries. Am I missing something?
Is there perhaps one rpm or some such for "gnome". A gnome cd perhaps.
Any info would be appreciated.

i did all that, but apparently the librvplayer.so doesn't like my netscape --
when i go to "about:plugins" or try to even start netscape with librvplayer.so
in the "plugins" directory i get "Bus Error" and netscape exits.

Hi all,
When running emacs under X11, emacs refuses to launch when
my network connection dies. The emacs sessions are all listed
as active processes, but no windows appear until the connection
is re-established (then they all appear at once).
Anyway to decouple emacs from my network connection? Is
there some workaround for this?
Much appreciated,

Running SuSE 6.0 Kern 2.2.3
Installed suse 6.0 (beautiful distribution) replacing RH5.2 on thinkpad
770. Compiled/installed kernel 2.2.3 as bzImage and compiled/installed
pcmcia 3.0.9 modules.
When booting, error comes up as eth0 is unknown interface (as it flies
by). AFTER that, it does catch the cardmgr and sets up the nic catching
the mac address and irq etc. There is still no network connectivity yet.
If you so an "ifconfig", it just shows the "lo" interface saying the
loopback is cool. Of course there is no eth0 interface, hence cannot
ping the nic. Now, if I run from the CL
"ifconfig -i eth0 11.11.11.69 netmask 255.0.0.0 up" ALL IS FINE FROM
THAT POINT ON. I have modified the /etc/rc.config to reflect all of
this...and it shows it in the config file, just doesn't execute it, and
have to do a manual "ifconfig -i eth0 blah blah"....What am
Imissing????? BTW Besides this, the new kernel smokes!

Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 22:08:50 GMT
Hi, i just compiled the 2.2.1 kernel and noticed that it seemed to recognize
my old proprietary cd rom (which i previously had to use via dos cause i
couldn't get linux to recognize it). but "seemed" is the key word here, this
is what it told me upon bootup:
Kernel detected SCSI CDROM drive /dev/, checking for a disc:
mount: /dev/ is not a block device
now in NT the driver for this drive is a scsi driver so i guess it makes
sense for linux to see it as a scsi device but as you can see it detects a
cdrom at /dev/ not /dev/cdrom (or /dev/anything for htat matter)
i would really like to get this cd-rom working with linux (good for using for
music or accessing little used small files on backup cds) so if anyone out
there have any ideas as to what i might be able to do to get linux to
recognize my cdrom properly?
thank you,

Agent's data files are in a proprietary format, seemingly only really

No, just the one here.

X just draws primitives / shapes, handles mouse actions and basically acts as
the "building blocks" for drawing widgets. Your complaint is about particular
widget sets and/or window managers - I point you to Enlightenment (window
manager) or GTK+ (widget set) as evidence that "X doesn't look like shit"
(X _can't_ look like shit, it doesn't _have_ a look!)
There are font servers that handle True Type fonts - look for freetype /
xfsft or xfstt. I run the latter here and it's very good.

The first line of the script is:
#!/bin/sh
/bin/sh is actually a link to bash (/bin/sh -> bash)
ls -al /usr/sbin/ppp-on says:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Feb 13 09:21 ppp-on -> /etc/ppp/ppp-on
ls -al /etc/ppp/ppp-on says:
-rwx------ 1 root root 15 Feb 13 09:17 /etc/ppp/ppp-on
In the ppp-on script, I have:
DIALER_SCRIPT=/etc/ppp/ppp-on-dialer
then, later:
exec /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 connect $DIALER_SCRIPT
ttyS1 is correct (I'm on COM1 and minicom has confirmed that)
/usr/sbin/pppd is correct.
I could paste the entire contents of my scripts here, but I was hoping it
would be a lot easier of a question than that.

I don't know squat re: databases. I need a relatively simple database for
work, to track production and repairs/customer service data on
a relatively small production line. About 100-1000 items per year.
(but expensive:) So a handfull of fields, date of man, p/n, revision,
firmware etc, plus a big text area for notes regarding testing and
service. At the moment I use html encoded text, and write up the forms
by hand, and grep for the important keywords. This is not an acceptable long
term solution. I would like a web front end to build/maintain/search
and modify the database. Would MySQL or postgreSQL be better? some other
db? thanks for any and all info.

from hdb at the boot.
So, i edited /etc/lilo.conf and it seems in order. Then, i changed
hdb=master and hda=slave, and reboot: there is the problem !
1) if i boot without my floppy, LILO seems to begin, but i only have
this on my screen:
LI
And i have to shutdown (with button) and re-change hda=master ... and
then reboot linux with the floppy.
2) if i boot with the floppy, LILO is booting normally, but i get the
following error message :
"Unable to open initial console"
and i have to shutdown ...
I have got 3 partitions on hdb:
/dev/hdb1 * (=> bootable) /root
/dev/hdb2 swap
/dev/hdb3 /root
Please, help me to get out definitly from MSDOS !
Thank you.

Lots of people have reported problems with the Emacs rpms from I think
older versions of Redhat. Is Emacs in 5.2 okay? Is XEmacs in 5.2
okay? Or should we continue to advise people to fetch fixed rpms from
the Redhat site?

Thanks to all those who helped by posting or by mail.
Once it had been pointed out that the man page for ghostscript was man
gs and *not* ghostscript, I spent an entertaining Saturday learning
about Linux, printers and ghostscript.
Thank you.

That's because it's buggy. I've heard of this problem over and over.

PowerQuest supposedly has a 30 day trial version of Partition Magic available
for free download. Folk who've used it say it's fully functional. (I bought
the full version & have only used it for whacking off chunks of a disk that
were going bad, but it seems to work well.) I think it's something obvious
like www.powerquest.com :)
The FDISK in DR/OpenDOS works well and has some advantages over M$DOS's
FDISK. For one thing it doesn't try to insist that the 2nd HD has to
be bootable. You can download the entire OpenDOS package -- check out
www.caldera.com (I think there's a new URL, someone can probably cough
it up)

Don't know about FreeDOS other than last time I went by there, they had
info to the effect it was up to about DOS3.2 level. Looking forward to a
modernized version :)
