Shouldn't the -r prevent that?

This sounds like a physical problem where full-speed data tranfer
over the scsi cable just isn't working. Check cable length, termination,
scsi id, etc., and perhaps try slowing down the max transfer rate
to the drive if the adapter allows it. Try a different cable.

Hi,
Attached is the file "sequence" containing a list of
Hex code.
There seems to be a running sequence that occurs
every like say 60 (I have marked it with xxx).
I have been cracking for quite some time but didn't
seem to comprehend this sequence...:-( This includes
any possible byte shift/ masking etc. that I've tried.
Can anyone help? I'm willing to reward anyone who
is able to crack this.
    Thanks!!

note: the reward is available only between 1st Jun 99 to
          1st Jul 99.

I switched from an ancient Slackware to Debian on my home system
a few weeks ago. I have to give a quick report at a meeting and
decided to try sgmltools.
Everything worked right out of the box, from Metafont to
ghostscript and xdvi. I'd expected the usual library and font battles.
Nice job, Debian crew.

Now I'm running out of excuses for LILO mini-HOWTO, except lack of
input. Post your weird LILO rants and raves, and your lilo.conf
with comments, at http://judi.greens.org/lilo/.
And grab the LILO user guide in PDF, it's really nice.

it is? are you sure? perhaps you should let bill gates know about
this. he's under the impression that nt was proprietary.

(this has nothing to do with the suitability or non-suitability of nt
as a web server.)

I know with my ATI Rage Pro, I had to diddle around a bit with the
/etc/X11/XF86Config after running the video configuration to comment
out all the resolutions that weren't working or that I didn't want.
Works great though (this was with rh5.2).

Of course, with Redhat 6.0, it works right out of the box. As a
matter of fact, I set up my whole system just like I wanted it and I
only had to type in one command the whole time: sndconfig.

Windows people don't believe me when I say that though ;-)

SuSE 6.1 comes with IPX not compiled into the kernel. you'll need to
recompile as a mod, or in the kernel.
I had the same prob, compiled it into the kernel, and now I can
print to the netware machine, and use the fileserver fine.

well, you cannot write books in ms-word that's for sure. once you hit
30 or so pages things start becoming painful, if not downright
unstable.

the documentation department where i work is using framemaker.
ms-word was rejected since it wouldn't cut the mustard.

i use emacs, auctex and ams-latex personally.

Hello all,

I'm trying to install RedHat 5.2 on an old Pentium90. The CDROM is a
Sony CDU33a. I'm getting nowhere 'cause it wont recognize my CDrom

Autoprobe didn't work. So I looked up the CDROM Settings for WinNT4.0
on same machine.
NT Config Says : Addr = 0x340-0x343, IRQ5.

Tried these setting in "Specify options" for CD ROM detection. CDRom
access light changes colors 2 times and then whole thing hangs.

Anybody know what to do ?

Previously successfully used Slackware 96 with same machine & CDU33a.

Any help much appreciated.

The common cause is having a file called checksum.c: there
is no (ix86) checksum.c file in the 2.2 kernel series. It
must be left over from some old kernel source. Delete it.

(The 2.2.2 kernel has been out of date for almost 3 months.
Try 2.2.7 or 2.2.9.)

Just out of curiosity, what are you actually _doing_ on a 386SX with 4
megs of RAM? I know this setup will make an excellent router,
firewall, or loghost; or can be used for all sorts of imbedded
applications, but I can't imagine how it could be useful for any type
of interactive logins.

I've found that even a stripped 2.0.36 kernel and a minimal system
swaps pretty heavily during interactive use. Jumping up to 8 or 16
megs makes a world of difference. Before spending too much time
tweaking your system, you may want to scrounge arround for some RAM.
Given the number of people who have upgrated from 4 MB sticks to 16 MB
sticks, it is quite easy to put together a 16 MB system. I needed
some a while back and had about a dozen 4MB sticks offered to me for
free or for nominal trade.

Thanks very much for any help.

Yes, I'm sure, I'm using it right now on my Slackware 3.6, kernel 2.2.6,
Netscape 4.07. It works. The actual name of the plugin is librvplayer.so
(couldn't check while I was at work, where I have to use this crappy
windblows). If you put in in /home/<yourusername>/.netscape/plugins,
together with RAObserver.class and RAPlayer.class, you'll be able to use
it as a plugin, too.

You're making it entirely clear that you don't understand the meaning of
the term "free software;" with that I quite agree.

<http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/selling.html> nicely documents some
reasons for free software to not only be "not free of charge," but
furthermore for vendors to charge *AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.*

I'm not sure who "whe" is, or which "Gods" you are referring to; I
believe you need to provide some more context to that.

and some aren't..

The fact that *vast* quantities of computer systems come with MSFT
software preloaded, and thus peoples' pockets "pre-picked" for the
MSFT Licensing Tax has *everything* to do with this.

If there are 10 million systems running Linux, it is likely that at
least 5 million of them, and probably far more, came with some MSFT
software pre-loaded. The estimated prices I keep hearing are that
preloads are priced at on the order of $50 per license.

Do the math.  $50 x 5 million ==> $250 Million.

That equation applies to virtually 100% of the laptops on which Linux
gets installed.

In effect, the people running Linux have paid a significant percentage
of a BILLION DOLLARS for software licenses.

Perhaps you built your PC from scratch, and thereby didn't have any
such licensing costs. That's the exception rather than the rule.

>Free ??? as in have to pay 20 bucks.. hmm... What have you self brought to
>the free software community...?

If money is given *freely,* then that's obviously not bringing
anything awful in.

Furthermore, it is quite clear that you haven't a clear understanding
of the economics of free software.

The *only* thing about free software that is free, in the sense of
"free of charge," is *LICENSING.*

There is nothing else that's free of charge.

>anything to do with money.

I suggest that you don't have a good understanding of economics, then,
because the monetary freedoms *solely* relate to the lack of licensing
costs.

All other sorts costs associated with the production, deployment, and
continuing use of software apply every bit as much to "free software"
as they do to proprietary software.

Proprietary software requires:
- Spending of various scarce resources for the creation of software.
- Payment for expenses associated with distributing software.
- Payment for expenses associated with installing and configuring
  software for use.
- Payment for purchasing, installing, and maintaining computer
  hardware used to run software.
- Monetary payments for licenses and for the tracking thereof.

The only thing that the use of free software takes off that list is
the final item.

>Free software is the wrong place for you to be if you want cash..but
>hey.. thats me..

Hey, someday you may figure out the bigger picture...

Personally, I feel that you can't go past CRT, which is created by
Vandyke Technologies. The latest versions supports various terminal
emulations, ANSI color, TAPI and Serial support just to name a few
features. TUCOWS has a trial version of the software available on its
website.

For watching CNN, I may have a solution for you, if you cannot setup
your realplayer 5.0 as a plugin. Go to
http://www.real.com/products/player/linux.html and download the G2
player for Linux, it plays the CNN content (which is encoded as crap,
anyway) flawlessly. It doesn't come with a plugin, though. To make it
work, make sure you have installed libstdc++-2.8.0-14, the one that
comes with RedHat 5.2, because it won't work with any other version.

I guess so, but it sure is not working. It is trying to initialise the
modem.
What exactly is the line in /etc/inittab?
Try also putting in
-x 8
as an argument to mgetty in /etc/inittab. That starts the debuging early
and you can watch it try to read teh mgetty.config file as well ( and
see errors).
