Then open /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
find a line with : # start some nice programs
Comment (put # at the beginning of ) each folowing line
and add : exec /opt/kde/bin/startkde .

Open /etc/bashrc and add at the end :
export PATH=.:/opt/kd/bin:$PATH

then startx and agree with the creating of some directories ang enjoy.

Is there any way to see an NTFS partition from Linux? I know that the
Linux-NT mini HOWTO says no, but it is dated Feb 1997.

Any suggestions?

yes. the new (development) kernels have support
for reading NTFS. the later 2.0.XX kernels may
have the option, but i've been on the download-
compile-reboot cycle since 2.1.121. i'm sure you
can at least find a good patch for the 2.0.XX
kernel to allow reading of NTFS.

No no no, that is *exactly* what you want!

If the system admin doesn't like the version of ls that came
with the system (say it wasn't the gnu color ls), then it can be
put into /usr/local/bin, and bingo everyone gets it by default.
(But since half of the admin scripts that came with the system
expect the format from the original ls program, they all set
their own PATH, and use the distribution ls command instead of
breaking.)

Ok, so the system admins ain't none too inclined towards a color
ls... and I just have to have it! So if they won't put it in
/usr/local/bin, then each and every user has the option of
compiling it themselves and putting it into their own ~/bin
directory to automatically make it the default for them (and
them alone).

That is a pretty standard way of doing it. It sure beats the
Hell out of annoying very busy systems admin people about
something they don't want to hear about. It also preserves /bin
and /usr/bin directories from the original distribution, which
can be very important about the time you receive and "upgade"
that *requires* the use of the default set of tools. You just
delete $HOME/bin and /usr/local/bin from the root PATH, and go
to work.

Hi!

Maybe it's a mistake of the HTML Authors but this occurs with some
CD-ROMs:
I am able to browse a CD with HTML Pages with e.g. Netscape under Win95
without any problems.
The same CD has broken links under Linux using any browser.

I mount my CD-ROM with this entry in /etc/fstab:
/dev/scd0 /scsi_cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto,user
0 0

The filenames were identical with this under Win95 with some -same-
capital letters.
One directory is mamed e.g. InfoSys on both OS. The link in the page is:

.../infosys/... and doesn't work under Linux.
My solution was to copy all the directories from the CD to HD and to
create symbolic links e.g.
infosys -> InfoSys - but: what a waste of Disk space!

Is there any solution to make the fs more fuzzy?

Thanks

Guido.

Accoring to the LILO documentation, printing LI at bootup and hanging
is caused by a "geometry mismatch". This can be caused if you have
one of them fancy new hard drives with mammoth size that has more than
1024 cylinders. If this is the cause of the problem (and it may not be)
you can create a partition that lies *entirely* below the 1024 cylinder
boundary and create a bootable linux partition here with LILO installed
in its root sector thingie.

Subject: make zImage fails at last step
Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 12:29:58 -0500

Hi,

I am compiling my kernel using the following commands:

    make xconfig;
    make dep; make clean; make zImage;

Everything goes well until the last step, it says:

Compressed size 20.
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include -traditional -c head.S
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include -O2 -DSTDC_HEADERS -c
misc.c -o misc.o
ld -qmagic -Ttext 0xfe0 -o vmlinux head.o misc.o piggy.o
ld: warning: cannot find entry symbol _start; defaulting to 00000fe0
misc.o: In function `fill_inbuf':
misc.o(.text+0x1bd8): undefined reference to `input_data'
misc.o(.text+0x1bdd): undefined reference to `input_len'
misc.o(.text+0x1bf3): undefined reference to `input_data'
make[2]: *** [vmlinux] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory
`/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/arch/i386/boot/compressed'
make[1]: *** [compressed/vmlinux] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [zImage] Error 2

Then it stops. Could you tell me what I should do to solve this?

My email is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks!!

Subject: Howto signal incoming mail
Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 16:37:23 +0100

Hi folks!

Now that I finally got my little Linux-Dialup-Mail-Server up and running,
I'm trying do some modifications:

My server automatically connects to the provider twice a day for sending and
receiving mail. I'm using fetchmail and sendmail entries in /etc/crontab for
that. Works fine.

But now I want my server to beep regulary (say every hour or so) when new
mail has been received. Surely an entry in crontab, that executes every
hour, would do the trick, but how do I find out whether new mail went in?

There are several users configured on the server and it should beep if any
of them has new mail and as long as the mail has not been read.

The fetchmail manpage says, that exit codes indicate new incoming mail - so
beeping right after the poll is easy. But obviously this does not solve the
problem.

Can anybody help me to get on the way? Thanks in advance!

...and a happy new year.
   Michael

Subject: New HD -- Partitioning question
Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 15:25:29 GMT

Hi.. I just ordered a new computer and I'm needing to transfer my
Linux system over to it.. My old drive has 3 partitions -- 1 Linux,
1 Swap, and my Win95 partition.. What I want to do is get rid of the
Win95 partition and resize the Linux one so I can put my old HD in my
new computer and I'll just use the new HD for Win95.. What program
should I use to do this? Should I invest in Partition Magic? Is fips
reliable?

Thanks,
Michael Champagne

Hi D
Yes it is.
It comes with SuSE Linux 5.3 and it's called kdb. You can Login and
choose the WM from a Drop-down-list.
