I hate to point out the obvious, but I've overlooked it often enough
myself... would running an FTP server on the Mac solve anything for you?

I am doing my best here to free myself from Microsoft's tentacles. I was
wondering if someone can tell me if I can implement some kind of power
saving in Linux (Red Hat 6.1) and how. I don't want to turn off my
computer, but I don't want to waste electricity either. Please keep in
mind that I am very, very new at this and will need a little bit (but
not too much) more detailed explanation. Thanks in advance.

I tried to install RH 6.1 on a P90 ASUS PCI/P54SP4 board, 64MB,
2 IDE (M-2.2 GB Maxtor, S-2.1 GB Quantum FB), ELSA Victory Erazor,
Intel Etherexpress NIC.

Nothing fancy, as one can see.

Installing runs fine, I install a minimum system, on root
partition of 2192 MB (or something like that), 350 MB swap on second IDE.

But when I reboot first time I just can see the letters LI
(obviously from LILO) and then stop. Nothing anymore. I can only
CTRL-ALT-DEL.

Tried this now three times, even with IDE Normal mode.

This is done during the boot process normally. If there
is a problem and fsck can't fix the file system automatically,
you will be dropped into a shell and be asked to run
fsck manually. So if the root file system is on
/eve/hda5
you would do
fsck /dev/hda5
and give the default response to all questions.

Alternately, you could boot using a rescue disk such as
Tom's root/boot disk. You don't need to mount the file
system in order to run fsck on it. Tom's root/boot disk may still
use a 2.0.3X kernel so it may not be able to deal with
partitions created with a recent version of fdisk. But
often you can use the installation media to boot and then
before the installation starts use Alt-F2 (or Ctrol-Alt-F2
if using a GUI interface for installation) to drop into
a bash shell. You can then usually run commands like fsck,
but on occasion it can be tricky. With RedHat from 6.1 on
you can enter
linux rescue
at the boot prompt, but with 6.1 you probably won't have the
device for the partition available and will have to make it
with mknod. This may have been fixed in 6.2.

Do man apm. apm apparently has the capability of putting
your computer in standby or ssupend mode if your computer is
capable of doing that. This is quite common in laptops but
I wasn't aware it is available for desktops.

In any case I think a lot of the power goes into running the
monitor, and gnome can use the monitor's power saving features.
I suspect KED can do so also.

Try using the installation media, and at the Boot: prompt
enter
vmlinuz root=/dev/XXXX
where XXXX is your root file system for Linux. That should let
you boot Linux and rerun lilo.

When I shutdown the system, I get the following error during the

Sending all processes the Kill signal done

My fstab file for the swap partition looks normal:

What could be wrong? I even have reformatted the swap partition to no

Hi all,

I am setting up a network at home using only linux boxes. Is it possible to
have a server hold all a persons work and authenticate their
password/username when they log on to a terminal machine instead of having
each machine holding a users account? (Their will eventually be many
machines and many users so having all the users and accounts stored on each
machine wouldn't be practical)
Is it then possible to map the users home directory on the server to the
local file system?
I would hope to use KDE to accomplishe the logon if possible.

Thank you

I'm facing an odd problem.

I recently build a new machine based around an AMD recommended motherboard
and K6-2/500. The strange thing is that with two identical Linux
installations this machine appears to be a little less than 20% faster
than my P160 machine (overclocked at 200). The test here is setiathome
which is getting 99%-plus CPU time on both machines (according to top).
Watching the progress counts on the two machines side by side shows
that for every 10% completed on the old machine the new machine has
processed 11.7% or thereabouts.

What am I missing? What do people recommend in the way of "proper"
benchmarks? Can I log kernel stats and perform the equivalent of
sar reports on commercial platforms?

(I heard some rumblings about Linux not behaving well with more than
64Mb of RAM. Since the new machine has 128Mb I wonder, is this a true
concern?)

At a guess, you're hitting the 1024 cylinder BIOS limitation.
Repartition your disk with a small (8-16 MB) partition at the start
of the disk, mount point /boot, and then try again.

Oh, it is. I have here a P75 with an APM-aware motherboard, dating
back from 1995.
He needs to check his BIOS to see if there are any power-saving
options available. If that's there, it is simply a matter of compiling
APM support into the kernel (at least, that's how it went for me).

If it's only the monitor you're concerned about, nearly all monitors
come with a neat, built-in power-saving device. They have been for
many years now; it's usually called "on/off switch". <G>

Seeing as how it's got an extension of .sh, have you tried running it with
the command
$ sh q3demo.gz.sh
?

With ksh, that is the right way. I guess it should be true for bash. 2&1>
would mix stdout and stderr message into the same file. I would not go for that
specially for crontab jobs.
