That didn't work. That was basically the same thing I was doing except
for breaking it into multiple lines. It still stops after the first rpm
is compiled.

I have a problem after the restruction of kernel.
I can use the module for network card when I use boot floppy disk,
but can't use it when I start with the LILO boot, and
the error messages is displayed as follows:
/lib/modules/2.2.13-33/net/via-rhine.o: unresolved symbol
skb_over_panic_R30a5b65c
/lib/modules/2.2.13-33/net/via-rhine.o: unresolved symbol

unregister_netdev_Re0b06163
/lib/modules/2.2.13-33/net/via-rhine.o: unresolved symbol
netif_rx_R1da5b113
What I did when the restruction of the kernel are as follows:
/cd usr/src/linux
make xconfig
make dep
make clean
make
make mrproper
make modules
make modules_install
depmod -a
And I made a boot disk with the command "make bzdisk"
And I confirmed boot was successfully done,
and the usage of module "via-rhine.o" for the network card.
And then, I installed kernel on the LILO using the command "make bzlilo"
The boot is successfully done through LILO,
but I can't use the module "via-rhine.o" even using the command as
follows:
cd /lib/modules/2.2.13-33/net
modprobe via-rhine
and the error message as I wrote above is displayed.
If we confirm it by "lsmod", the module is not used.
Even this mail can be sent using boot floppy disk.
Thanks for helps.
With Best Regards

Bill Gatesborg owns just under 241,000 shares of RedHat, Inc. That is
definitely not enough to control the company. I use RedHat and I think

"Unresolved symbols in FOO" means that module FOO is A) not compiled
correctly or B) depends on another module or piece of kernel
functionality that is not present. For example, if you have SCSI
emulation for IDE devices compiled as a module, and you don't have SCSI
support compiled into the kernel or available as a module, there will be
unresolved symbols in ide-scsi.o. Also, if you have a module compiled
against 2.2.15 sitting in the /lib/modules/2.2.14/ directory, you will
get unresolved symbols.
Unresolved symbols tend to occur when people compile a kernel for the
first time on a standard distribution. People turn off the things they
don't need (like ISDN support, Video4Linux support, etc.) but the
modules for ISDN support and Video4Linux are still hanging around in
/lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION/ , and since the kernel contains no "hooks"
for these things, you get unresolved symbols upon bootup. One thing I
often do is "rm -rf /lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION" immediately before
doing "make modules_install". Be careful, though....

Subject: A troubling problem with GNOME and UID.
Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 16:15:11 -0400
Hi
I am a rookie root on a Red Hat 6.2 system.
I am facing a strange problem with a particular user on my system.
Let us call him bob. His UID before all the trouble started, was 500.
However, to ensure access to an NFS filesystem, I changed his UID to
that on the other server (38078).
Now he comes and tells me that he cannot start his GUI (GNOME) ! I
asked him to login and what follows is an eyewitness account :
1. The password was accepted.
2. The Enlightenment WM "seemed" to start.
3. The file manager which usually launches upon login into GNOME did not
start and it was only by using the middle button on the mouse was I able
to bring up a menu and from that, an xterm. There was a core file (you
guessed it) generated. And none of the menus or the gnome panel turned
up (just an
irritating blank blue screen).
Now since he did not have anything critical in his area, I kill -9 'ed
my way out and attempted to delete his login using linuxconf. But this
did not work. Ultimately, I had to manually delete the line in
/etc/passwd.
Then I created a new account for him with the UID set to 38078 and asked
him to login again. Hey presto, the same sequence of events ensued.
I am at my wits end. He is able to login using KDE and work, but this is
troubling (not to mention humiliating) to me.
Thanks in advance,
Madhusudan Singh.

The best would be that everyone could speak any other language on the world
to communicate with each other. I do like my native language (Spanish), but
IMHO one of the best things that can happen to the world is to have only one
language for all. With different languages people often misunderstand each
other, leading to confusion and, sometimes, discussions. Moreover, having
different languages makes people think there are real differences, when in
the important things we are (should be) equal.
Nowadays, the Internet has succeed beacuse there is a standard "language",
IP. Maybe it is not the best possible one, but is the one everyone agreed to
talk. So we can communicate directly and clearly, no translations and no
misunderstandings (except for the Microsoft variants :-)).
Don't know if I've explained myself very well, but this is the problem I was
trying to show. If speaking in Spanish I'm sure I would have expressed
better, but the only way for us to communicate is to agree on a common
language. Currently, in this group the language used is English. I'd prefer
Spanish, you French and some others Chinese, but there must be an agreement.
The USA started all of this, so english is the natural choice. Will be the
same in the future ?. Don't know, but it MUST arrive the time where only one
language exists in the world.

I know how you feel. But actually it IS the monopolizing microsoft's
fault. I own an HP Pavilion 4463. Totoal incompatible with Linux.
Nothing but winhardware. The problem is that Micro$oft is making deals
with all these companies to use their OS and to develop hardware using the
Windows OS "specifically".
But I'm sure there's hope on the horizon. Just keep your eyes out for
drivers. Now Linux won't be as easy as Windoze, but it's a learning
experience. As found, I've found some "beta" drivers for my Rockwell
modem.
If you are looking for ease of installation then there is a software called
WinLinux. It installs just like a regular appication and you don't have to
partition your hard drive.
As you I am completely new to Linux. But what keeps me going to learn all
I can is the fact of what yuo said about M$ monopolizing the industry. The
goal to somehow get these winsystems to work with Linux.

Well, this should work. On the off chance that it's actually printing
to standard error instead of standard out, try this:
tcpdump -t -i ppp0 | grep "A?" > /var/log/dns.lookups 2>&1
This directs stderr AND stdout to the file.
