My PPP connection is working fine. However, when it runs, it executes ip-up
script twice. I am not able to figure out why it is running twice. The man pages
for pppd did not help.

The log files show that ip-up is being invoked by pppd. Even the debug option
for pppd, reveals the same information in the syslog.

The following is the output from the pstree (executed in ip-up) debugging information.

 |-pppd(28274) -d /dev/ttyS1 115200 bsdcomp 15,15 connect
 |chat\040-v\040""\040atdt1234567\040"CONNECT"
 | `-ip-up(28299) /etc/ppp/ip-up ppp0 /dev/ttyS1 115200 172.227.51.108 172.97.214.34
 | `-pstree(28303) -pa

 |-pppd(28274) -d /dev/ttyS1 115200 bsdcomp 15,15 connect
 |chat\040-v\040""\040atdt1234567\040"CONNECT"
 | `-ip-up(28678) /etc/ppp/ip-up ppp0 /dev/ttyS1 115200 172.227.51.108 172.97.214.34
 | `-pstree(28680) -pa

Is my invocation of pppd correct?

#!/bin/sh

PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin

/usr/sbin/pppd -d /dev/ttyS1 115200 bsdcomp 15,15 connect 'chat -v "" atdt1234567
"CONNECT"'

Thank you for any pointers.

MySQL is free and relatively easy to use. I use it personally for my home
use and a little web work.

I have been told it does't throttle well under heavy load, but can
nbeither confirm nor deny that.

All the documentation seems to imply that one can't actually
"install" an SRPM and leave the source files installed.
The rpm docs say the --rebuild option installs the source,
builds and installs the package and then deletes the source.

Suppose I just want to install the sources and rebuild the
package myself after changing some options? How do I accomplish
this?

Adding the 'setled' commands in a loop in rc.local sets the Num Lock
key on for all virtual consoles, but when X starts up, it turns off.
I have tried 'xset' and have tried editing XF86Config to allow NumLock
control, but I must have done it wrong because now I can't even turn
on the Num Lock manually! (I'll have to restore XF86Config.) What's
the magic to have Num Lock on at boot time?

You sure? That error message occurs when you try to e2fsck a swap
partition, or indeed most non-ext2 partitions.

This is troubling. That sort of error on a hard drive may indicate a
hardware problem. Check the cable connection and the power supply. If
you have a lot of spare space somewhere, do this:
dd if=/dev/hdc1 of=/somewhere conv=noerror
e2fsck /somewhere

Any suggestions?

I know I could build my own, but local policy prohibits that. I could

Dell seems to charge much more for a machine with Linux then it does for
the same system with Windows, so you are pretty much stuck with buying a
Windows machine even if you aren't going to use the Windows software. I
know how you feel, I own four copies of Windows and Office and never use
any of them. Frankly I'd rather sit on a hot poker than use a Microsoft
product but the fact is it's cheaper to buy a machine from Dell, even
with the Microsoft tax, then it is to buy a Linux system from someone
else. There is one way to get some value from the Windows crap that you
end up owning. Buy a copy of Win4Lin from http://www.trelos.com. Win4Lin
allows you to run Windows on top of Linux so you can use those Windows
applications that you're stuck with. Win4Lin fixes Win98's worst
feature, when a program crashes it doesn't bring down the system just
the window in which you are running Win4Lin.

I do not have a solution here but I do have the same problem and I have
noticed some peculiarities:

1) This only occurs with ftp exchanges, (at least through my experience)
and typically on larger file gets.
2) it happens with masqueraded transfers or on transfers originating from
        the server itself.
3) /sbin/ifup ppp0 has been putting a lock on the wrong serial port
4) The behavior changes when I use setserial to reassign the uart type:
8250: Every transfer work perfectly, as you would expect for
this uart. it is slow, but reliable. Very slow, but
                all transfers work.
16550a: should work, my modem is new and not a winmodem. In fact
it does work on everything but some ftp transfers. not
all, but some. speed is good, except the little problem
most other uarts function like the 16550a as far as I can tell.
5) Obviously is not a modem issue because windows 9x and NT 5 have no
        issues with it.
6) /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS2 share irqs, but I think this is standard.
7) I believe that this problem may have originated when I installed the
2.2.16 kernel, though I have not yet tested this hypothesis.
8) the client software is not the issue either, as ftp, ncftp, and
netscape (linux) and opera/explorer/ftp (win/masqueraded machine)
        all give the same trouble.

I hope that these leads can give someone some insigt into a
solution. My system is offline at the moment and unfortunately no solutions
can be tested. as a temp solution for these downloads I have been
switching the uart to 8250 (requires restarting of ppp0) and this is a
pain. not to mention the 20 meg downloads at 2k/s take quite a while.
If I can't get it fixed then my hope is taht the 2.4.x kernels do
not cause the same problem. I am curious if anyone has this problem who
is NOT connecting over a modem. That is why I think the problem
originates through the serial port. Good luck,

        Jason

Well something is wrong. Have you tried to ftp something? Tried setting

I'm not sure about this (which is why I am only e-mailing you),
but I had similar problems, and after trying some things decided
it might be that one also needs to install db3 stuff:

$ rpm -qa |grep db3
db3-devel-3.1.14-0.2.6x
db3-3.1.14-0.2.6x
db3-utils-3.1.14-0.2.6x

because now rpm-4:

$ rpm -qv rpm
rpm-4.0-0.62

works.

It could be due to several reasons, but there seems to be due to an
incompatibility with the ftp server daemon, as it occurs both with NT
and Linux servers. I've noticed it mostly when connecting to wu-ftpd.
I'm not sure exactly what daemon NT servers use. It might be due to
large data packets overrunning the buffers, but there's no conclusive
proof of that. About the only real fix I've been able to come up with
is to use the Linux port of the FreeBSD ftp server, which you'll need
to build on your own system. It's on freshmeat, at least, and should
be on the standard source archives.

I'm trying to install kernel-2.2.16-3.src.rpm downloaded from one
of the RedHat mirrors. The command

   rpm -i kernel-2.2.16-3.src.rpm

takes only 3 seconds to run, prints no error messages,
and appears to do NOTHING. It does not install the SRPM.

Current OS is RH 2.2.16-3 installed from the binary RPM.
I need to rebuild the kernel to install additional modules
(GRE masquerading).

Sorry, I omitted the following from the previous message:

Current OS is RH 6.2 with 2.2.16-3 kernel installed from
RPM, on a P-II with 128MB memory and 12GB disk. I'm trying
to rebuild the kernel to install some additional modules.

Can you show what should be there? Thanks.

That is cool! I didn't know linux had that! It's flipping fast too! 50 test
users added in less than a second on a pentium 200. I'm impressed...

The only problem is that it doesn't automatically copy in the /etc/skel files.
That can be easily scripted though.

Who wants to eplanation how to do this and earn money like me, should do
this:
Send me a e-mail message with SUBJECT : EARNING, HOW? In the message body
should not write anything, only name of his country.
How I earned money with no online works? It is about MLM (Multlevel
Marekting). It really works.
Explanation will be in the e-mail

Thanx.

Sincerely,

Nick

Subject: Memory question
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 18:07:00 +0200

When I use commands like "top" and others related with memory usage, I
always find the fields "shared", "buffers", "cache"..., but there are so
many kind of buffers and cache that I don't know what does "buffers" and
"cache" means.

I tried to look for that in the man pages and in the Kpm documentation
but I didn't find anything. Does someone know where can I find
information related to this? thanks
