Subject: Unknown Ethernet Packet
Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2000 03:34:06 GMT

I am getting unknown Ethernet broadcast packets
on the network from the same device and it's
driving me crazy trying to figure out what they
are. The packets (each 1.51 Kb) are being
broadcasted twice every second. The broadcast is
happening 24/7. More info is below:

There is a series of cascading switches/hubs on
our company's network and the broadcasted packets
are being propogated to all devices. We have
about 150 nodes on the network.

Does anyone have any idea of what this is?

Below are more specific info of one packet:
(Almost all the packets look identical to each
other, though.)

FRAME: Total frame length: 1510 bytes

ETHERNET: Destination address : FFFFFFFFFFFF
ETHERNET: Source address : 020100000000

ETHERNET: Ethernet Type : 0x886F

(*The monitor software that I am using listed
this an unknown protocol.)

ETHERNET: Ethernet Data: Number of data bytes
remaining = 1496 (0x05D8)

Below is the raw DATA payload portion of the
ethernet packet (ignore the right hand most
column as the cut-and-paste didn't translate some
character properly into ASCII.)

In your /sbin/init.d/boot script (/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit if you're on a
RedHat or derived system) there's a line that calls "update". Change
this line to read like so:
   /sbin/update -f XXX -s XXX
where XXX is a delay in seconds. Warning: Setting XXX to very large
values is *NOT* a good idea. Anything over 3600 seconds is "very large".

This should help, but I've never played around with it even though my
main system is on 23/6 (dualboot to '98, yuck) since my disk drives are
fairly quiet.

Subject: help newbie with configuring squid
Date: 2 Dec 2000 04:56:33 GMT

Hi everyone,

I am running Linux RH 6.1 (kernel 2.2.17) to connect my small LAN to the
internet via masquerading and ipchains. Everything is working perfectly.
Now, I would like to implement transparent web-caching server on the Linux
box to improve the speed for users on my network (I do understand the pros
and cons of transparent proxying). However, I could not find any
information at http://www.squid-cache.org in implmentating transparent
caching with squid. The reason I like to implement transparent proxying
(or caching) is because I do not want to mess with configuring client
browsers. I consider myself a linux newbie even though I am pretty good
at recompiling the kernel and setting up my own mail server using sendmail.
If anyone has experience with configuring transparent caching with squid,
please show me how to do it.

Regards,

Hi,
Which driver should I use for the DLink DFE-530 TX.

I tried enabling rtl8139 and the 'via rhine' in the /etc/rc.d/rc.module
file, but no luck.

Slackware 7

Where, in what file(s), is the default system-wide PATH set? I'm
running Mandrake 7.02, if that makes a difference.

Thanks...

I don't know about Linux or Windows, but I know they work under Mike
Sherman. These guys can easily be controlled from the line of
scrimmage and I would also assume the command line.
