Isn't that the truth. My first exposure to Unix was in 79.
We thought we were hot stuff after sucessfully connecting
several 2400 Baud Hazeltine terminals to a Burroughs Unix
box... I digress...
It's funny... I've built routers from the ground up, modified
the internals of numerous comm stacks.... Now here I am
sweating bullets all because my miserable ISP won't tell
me about their line discipline and login settings. -Go figure.

No, I could hear his wings unfolding in the background.

Here's what comes out of pppd...
pppd 2.3.8 started by root, uid 0
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated.
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
Exit.

I tried this with no success. It changed the characteristic
of the chat sequence such that it would time-out, reset the
modem and try again.

Doing this only only showed that the line was "Connected".
Perhaps, the absense of anything indicating "PAP" or "CHAP"
means that neither are being used.

I'm going to do some reading about PAP/CHAP now...
