I have changed this in sendmail.cf but it still tries to send the mail,
according to /var/log/maillog, another smarthost, from the same ISP but not
the mail server it should go to ....

:(

/etc/sendmail.cf grep for "Smart" and edit accordingly.
however take a look also at you mailer config, possably its addressing mail
for you to the wrong hosts, or maybe trying to send mail to the recipriant
directly!!.
