yes

It's on the primary slave drive. It was partitioned automatically by
win95 when the drive was installed as it was too large to be
recognised. Then it was compressed with drive space.... and then the
host was again compressed etc. The slackware program was originally
installed on drive U: hosted by drive S: When this didn't work I
reinstalled it on drive H: hosted by drive D:
On the slave drive there are 6 host drives and 11 compressed drives,
with only 4 of them in use (now with the 2 slackware installations
there are 6 in use.

I shut down windows to reboot in DOS, go to the drive where it's
located, and then to the Linux directory.

I enter "loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb1 rw"

I suspect so also but what is the problem? perhaps it can't run from a
compressed drive??

> Where do you get the "hint" you refer to below?

After I enter the command, the program goes through its installation
and produces 3 pages of results along the way. When it displays the
'partition check:'     it displays "hda:[EZD][remap
0->1][786/64/63]hda1 hda4

hdb:[EZD][remap 0->1][700/255/63]hdb1 hdb2 <hdb5 hdb6 hdb7 hdb8 hdb9>"
According to the FAQ file it should be one of these displayed,
however, the hda1 and hda4 returns the "kernel panic" error. Using
hdb1 returns "mounting root
VFS:mounted root (umsdos filesystem)
unable to open an intitial console"
and the rest of them return "attempt to access beyond end of device"
This leads me to believe that hdb1 should be the right one.??
