Just noticed that this message was from you. I guess asking in my other
message that you supply the Slackware version wasn't very helpful, given
this question. Oh well .... how to figure it out? Depends on what you have
to work with.

1. If you have a genuine CD set from Slackware,it will list the version on
the CDs, on the case, and on the printed docs. But it can't be this easy, right?

2. If you have an unofficial Slackware CD (in the US, this would be one from
Cheapbytes or Linux Central or a handful of other places), again the version
should be printed on the CD. Same usually goes for the versions that come
with books. But it's probably not this easy either, right?

3. If all you have to check is the system itself, here are some things to
look at:

A. What kernel version is it running? "uname -a" is one check, but a better
one is to see what is listed in the kernel source tree. What is
/usr/src/linux symlinked to ("ls -l /usr/src/linux")? The number at the end
of that is the kernel version, and it won't always match the uname report.

B. Are you running the shadow password system? That is, does the file
/etc/shadow exist?

C. What are the dates on /etc/rc.d/rc.S, /etc/rc.d/rc.M, and /etc/rc.d/rc.K
(as shown by "ls -l")?

When I have more time, I'll write up the secret decoder ring that turns
these into a Slackware version (and actually verify that this is enough to
distinguish at least among the 5 or 6 versions I have around). For now, send
me this info and I should be able to tell you what version you're running
(assuming it hasn't been updated a lot after installation).
