Using whatever setup tool you are using for X (for example, xf86config),
when you get to the point where you are choosing resolutions, be sure that
the largest resolution you include is (a) physically supported by your
monitor and (b) first on the list. This should serve bring X up in a size
that matches the screen. The "monitor shuts down" problem sounds like your
video card is trying to send a resolution that your monitor won't support.
The "virtual screen" problem derives from the fact that the X screen is
always the largest available resolution, with any lower resolution
implemented as a "window" on the larger screen.

If this doesn't fix your problem and you want to post a followup, next time
include details of your monitor, your ideo card, and which X server you are
running.
