I have installed debian slackware redhat SuSe and not one of them has
toasted any of my smc_ultra cards or any other for that matter, i have
installed from 386's (old wd8003's) to pentuim 2's, but never a
smell anywhere and they all work.

I would certanly get your motherbaord checked out.
