Yes it was connected for sure, but probably it was switched off.

No, I have not. I just added these two lines and, after re-booting the
system, nothing changed.

It looks to me that Linux rather doesn't see the parallel port at all
(the printer itself is further kuestion :-))  I say that, because I
remember Windoze that was able to initialize a printer on a lpt port
although the printer hasn't  been configured yet thru the control panel.
But, under Linux, there is no sign that printer (switched on) is there
on the port. Any idea?
