I installed NETSC 4.51 very recently. I dont think it will be up to the task as
I do not see any filtering of my messages coming from lists. It sure is
nice to
have such a good, versatile program available under Linux.
It's the way to go to get started quickly. Needs a working pppd.
I will try procmail for filtering. Looks daunting .....

When I ran netcfg I got the impression that it is a network-configuration-tool.
I said ".... not installed" or something. I thought I was on the wrong track
 and abandoned the effort.
(setting up an ISP link is not considered networking looks like)

Hugh, please pity the real newbie. Without prepared scripts they never get
Linux
going beyond installing an RPM (I installed 'joe' and 'netscape') and
running an
 application or utility.
It is necessary for the survival of newbie as well as Linux that newbies
have fun
by making a bit progress now and then. That means emailing and surfing
capability
after a few months of reading newbie and trying hard. Getting pppd going was
essential for me. (Yes, I got it working!)

RH scripts provide that progress. The lack of instructions still makes it
nearly
impossible to use them. Ron Marriage got me on the track with a private
message
showing (amongst a load of other good pointers):
#Dial, Connect & Hangup from PPP Connections
alias dial388="/sbin/ifup ppp0"
alias hangup388="/sbin/ifdown ppp0"
alias dial003="/sbin/ifup ppp1"
alias hangup003="/sbin/ifdown ppp1"

Only after that I found out that RH 5.0 has all the scripts, ready to use. I
found the scripts by tracing "ifup". Found a SECOND script "chat-ppp0".
Thanks to those scripts I got a link to the ISP.
The subject "post-dial terminal-screen" was a temporary obstacle. Editing the
script (what script??? I found the right script by accident. I noticed 2
scripts
with a RECENT DATE. Looking inside I found the username and phone I had
entered
 via the controlpanel under X)
(Finding a script that way tells you how good the instructions are.)

Editing the script I corrected a mis-conception (access-pwd and POP3-pwd
mixed up)
and I had access!! (pppd working!). This correction got me past the
'post-dial terminal-screen' prob (Proves that the pop-up screen in WINxx
is just
 decoration).

NOW THE FUN HAS RETURNED.
EVERY Internet activity depends on pppd.
After pppd I got fetchmail working (was easy, it's READY to RUN):
   (from my manual log:)
  alias fetchm="fetchmail -k cebu.weblinq.com" add to bashrc(done)
-k (keep) Do not delete the mail at the ISP

FETCHMAIL allowed me to receive POP-3 email.
RH 5.0 is setup to drop the mail in the correct place so PINE reads it.
Finally! I got messages into PINE (probably same for MUTT and ....).

(I get stuck on 'sendmail' though. How PINE and 'sendmail' are inter-acting?
I do my homework first .... ask questions later.)

I was slow in answering newbie because I was enjoying.

I was ready to quit Linux (earlier). It was the help of newbie-list-members
that got me over the hump.
I like to encourage brandnew newbies to write if they see an answer to a
question (send it private if it not of general interest). Although the
'gurus' do the heavy work (thank you guys/gals! we learn from your
 experience/examples/suggestions/references), a little pointer from a newbie
that just has gone thru the same problem can make a real difference.
