I contend that it's the > IP address you are interested in, not the ppp interface. I don't disagree. MRTG was a bad example; it uses IP addresses and would actually be a solution in this case. 'ifconfig' or 'pppstats' give stats per device name and would be poor choices to monitor a specific line.
