Herbert Wengatz wrote a diatribe with regard to rebooting Linux vs
NT. LINUX won becuase you didn't need to reboot in a number of
situations where Windoze products did require a reboot.
My maximum up time on any OS has not gotten past 24 hours in the past
10 years. That includes RT-11, Windows, NY, OS/2, Macintosh, A/UX,
and LINUX.
I grant him the most annoying situation is where a Windoze
application leaks memory the OS is impotent to stop it. Restarting is
the only way to regain control of the system. It should be noted that
you don't have to reboot! In time the system will crash if you have
the patience to work with a degraded system until the crash. In
conclusion he wrote:

I live in an area where lightning storms have taken-out my water pump
and refrigerator. Lightning struck near a co-worker's house. When the
lightning struck it took out their computer and damn near everything
else. The etch burned through all the circuit boards. When you picked
up the box and shook it, it sounded like it was full of sugar cubes.
So when I am not using my systems at home. First I power down and
then I always unplug the power and telephone lines.
Now if you can get past my power problems then what you say makes
sense. But even then I don't see ant reason to leave a system running
that no one is using. (1) It wastes power. (2) It wears rotating
mechanical components, (e.g. Fans, disks that don't spin down, etc.)
Rebooting is a consequence of restarting the system. If you need to
restart you need to re-boot.
