You should have seen the condition of the water pump and refrigerator
motor. The water pump was submersed in water at the time. It was at
the bottom of a 10" diameter hole filled with water 345 feet down.
Both motors were melted. Lightning jumps about 1000+ from the ground
to the cloud. Do you think the switch contacts are going to be too
far?

If the insurance the surge protectors pays off then that in itself
would make them a good investment. A problem with some surge
suppressors is that cheap ones are made with neon bulbs. When the
bulb shorts they discharge the voltage. But they become polarized in
one direction. Once that first transient is gone the magnetic flux,
created by the first transient, drops back into the wire there is an
(almost) equal transient that comes down the wire polarized in the
reverse direction. The bulbs need time to reverse their polarity and
as a result the second transient see the bulbs as open and it passes
on into the equipment.

I do use an old isolation transformer. It does a great job of
filtering the power an provides great protection against brown outs.
Its just a large transformer so it should last a long time, nothing
to break, and when it does finally die it will make a great anchor it
must weigh 80 to 100 lbs. I also use an APC/UPS with my Macintosh
SE/30. It is a zero footprint device that give about 10 mintues
warning. It was free.
