To get X going again, reverse whatever changes you made to your XF86Config file, and that should do it, no?
If you could post a copy of your XF86Config that would be most helpful. (the faulty version... I'm assuming this is where the problem is, I can't think of any other obvious places where changes made installing GL drivers overlap with X) If you didn't change your XF86Config file by hand, um... do they have some fancy install script that does it for you nowdays perhaps? What exactly did you "do"? You got the kernel module, and glx stuff etc.... and compiled and installed... so /usr/lib/libGL.so should be a symlink pointing to something with a number on it, eg. libGL.so.1.0.1541 (you're using nvidia drivers right?)... and NVdriver, the kernel module, should be in the appropriate place (/lib/modules/your_kernel_version/kernel/video/NVDriver)... And in your XF86Config file (/etc/X11/XF86Config) you have: Load "glx" in Section "Module" and... um.... oh yeah, in your "device" section, your driver is set to "nvidia" (not "nv", the default / opensource one) .... Um... if X still won't start (even if you put the XF86Config changes back to how it was before you tried installing the drivers?) then... Try starting X (type 'xinit' on the command line, or 'startx') and when it fails, go grab the log (probably /var/log/XFree86.0.log) and post the relevant part of that, where it hits the error (likely at the bottom - so post the last 10 lines or so). Cheers, Gareth ps. sorry I can't come take a look (physically), but I don't have a lot of spare time on my hands now uni has started again, and these things (computer things in general for that matter, when troubleshooting) have a way of dragging on if things don't go right. If worst comes to worst and it still isn't working by the time the workshop comes around, I hope we can get it working then...
