I was a "newbie" not so long ago so I feel qualified to give you answers at the right level.
First thing to learn about Linux and the Linux "community" is that there seem to be heaps of different but correct answers to most questions. There are heaps of people willing to help all levels so although you might seem bewildered at this stage, hang in there, the benefits and learning experience is worth it. The other important thing is that Google is your friend. I started with RedHat but would recommend Mandrake as a first distro. In my experience it seems the best for hardware detection and getting up to speed quickly. You can download, buy or scrounge cd's. (Several people on this list can sell them to you) "limited computer intelligence" may be a stumbling block - depending on what those limitations are. (relative to what?) Robert Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile way and you have their shoes. -----Original Message----- From: michael - (mike) brooker [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, 1 October 2003 1:14 p.m. To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: LINUX QUESTIONS Hi, As yet I am not a LINUX user. First I want to find out the best (read easiest) format to use, eg. REDHAT, X, or whatever. So, will someone please point me in the right direction? Where do I download the free Linux? Is there a site with an internet download? Or do I need to download set-up discs? I'm running win98 on a celeron chip. I have a 40 gig HDD, and 128 RAM - and limited computer intelligence. Well, not too low! Thanks for any help. mike brooker
