Thanks.  I will.  I went back and am now just finishing up reinstall with 
GRUB just to see if it's still broken.  This will tell me definitely if 
GRUB has problems with my setup. If so I guess I'll bug it to the GNU GRUB 
people.

I agree - it helps to know as much as you can.
