I'm glad you figured it out. FWIW, tcpflow is a program that's very useful for debugging things like this. It is very similar to tcpdump except that it creates files for each connection (e.g. one for the connection from the pop/imap client to the server, and another for the return traffic). The tcpflow command line arguments are pretty much the same as for tcpdump enabling you to look at specific hosts and ports.
