Alsa seems to want to be a module. Modules seem to go in /lib/modules/<your kernel version here>/... Alsa recommends rebuilding the modules when you upgrade the kernel (which ensures they get put in the new version specific tree). If you're using alsa, you might try rebuilding or reinstalling it. Do you get any error messages from boot scripts or the kernel about sound? If you're using a sound module, you can grep through your logs for "modprobe". I don't have Suse so I'm not sure which files are pertinent.
