One man's bloat is another man's progress.
Somebody is always thinking up new features.
And, web sites keep getting more complex and demanding of the browser.
I used to use opera until I switched over to netscape 6.2.
I had frequent crashes with the lightweight opera on diverse web sites,
mainly due I suspect to the pop up ads. And, many pages wouldn't load all
the way. I kept having to hit the stop button to kill the download.
And, opera just doesn't handle some web sites, period.
So, with the bloated netscape 6.2, which I have been using for a couple of
months, I haven't had a single crash or found a single web site I can't
browse. And, I can use netscape email when I want to send mail to web sites
easily.
You can't stand still because the world is still moving and
is a very diverse place. Have you ever tried to write javascript? It
is a mess, with poor standardization. A competent browser has to be
able to handle awful javascript, because not all web sites you want to
visit comply with the "standards".
And, if you want to get more users, you have to keep making your software
easier to use, which means more bloat to some people.
So, if you want to avoid bloat, use lynx!
