Greetings!

If anyone if looking for a good distribution to use at a LDD event, I
would like to suggest Linux Mandrake 6.0 as one to consider.

I ordered both Mandrake and Debian from CheapBytes last week. This means I
did *not* get the full package of books and other support materials, but
in the case of users inspired to try out Linux after seeing it demo'd,
this is likely to be the case as well -- especially if they get a disc
from the event.

While my experience is certainly not the only valid one, I had trouble
with Debian and never got it to install. I got through most of the
install process (and found it well-designed and likeable), but when it
tried to install the base system, I repeatedly got error messages
(which I don't recall exactly right now, unfortunately). Whether I have a
bad disc or was somehow mis-specifying my system config, or just doing
something stupid, I don't know.

Mandrake, on the other hand, went on without a hitch, and before I knew it
I was staring at a graphical login screen, and then the KDE desktop.
(Gnome is also included, but I haven't tried it out yet.)

For those not familiar with the Mandrake distrib (is it known / popular in
Europe or Asia?), it is based on Redhat, uses rpms, but tries to also add
some bug fixes and updated software based on each major Redhat release.

I'm not suggesting this is the *only* or *single-best* distrib. to demo,
but I was impressed by its autodetection of my video card (ATI XPert@ Play
98) and ethernet card (Orchid), which Redhat 5.2 did not do. (I have not
used the actual Redhat 6.0).

Hope this is useful!
