I took it that it was indeed Setsuna imagining what would happen if Japan
became like where he grew up. That's something I'm finding interesting- the
bulk of fiction such as this is based on the ideals of Western developed
countries. 00 is instead presenting larger world views. I wouldn't doubt there
are Setsunas in the world- people with unfairly hellish pasts in their homeland
who envy and loathe folks in other countries whose biggest worry is likely "The
bus was late today". Hopefully this is something they can actually juggle well.
As someone from the UK, I'll admit I'm not too happy that the AEU are
apparently the cliche villainy faction.

Tieria's annoying, but you can at least see where he's coming from. Even
though, as you point out, he almost seems arrogant enough to believe that he's
the only one that should be in CB.

I can't decide which of two things Setsuna's park incident is. It could be
Setsuna reliving elements of what he's gone through in his life. Or it could
be a sense on his part that the people there don't deserve the peace that
they're enjoying, and a sub-conscious "wish" on his part that they deserve
something like the bomb to wake them up. But with regards to the scene where
he and Tieria end up in a stand-off, I don't think it's so much that he has
something to prove. I think his motivation in the incident is that Tieria is
threatening to take away the one thing that Setsuna has left in his life that
he puts any value on - that being Exia.

So far...

1.) We've seen no evidence of Setsuna having anything other than a strictly
professional and stand-offish relationship with anyone in CB.

2.) Setsuna is living by himself in Japan, whereas we've seen scenes with
Lockon and Allelujah together when not on missions (probably in that mobile
suit storage pod on the remote island). The suggestion is that Setsuna is
living alone by choice, and could remain close to the others if he chose to do
so.
3.) Setsuna has an extremely sparse apartment that appears to only have his
bed, his computer, and a very small TV display that he uses to watch news
announcements.
4.) Setsuna has chosen not to try and get better acquainted with his neighbor,
who is making fairly obvious overtures of friendship.
5.) When Setsuna destroyed Col. Sergei's mobile suit, Setsuna's comment was,
"Don't touch my mobile suit."

The implication, imo, is that Exia is currently the only thing that Setsuna
places any value on, and that he's very strongly attached to it. Even
Setsuna's comment about why he's a member of the team hints at someone who has
almost nothing left to live for.

The need to use Virtue to recharge Ptolemais was rather odd... I assume
there's a good reason that the ship can't recharge by itself (after all, it's
using a Gundam, which has a much smaller reactor than one would think that the
Ptolemais could safely mount), and hopefully it'll be revealed later on in the
series.

Not sure I'm ready to see Tieria stepped on yet. He's an ass alright, but given
how CB looks like it's always on thin ice, I can't blame him for being
overcautious. Although does he really think ANYONE in CB besides him deserves
to be there? Ali, on the other hand... being stepped on would be over far too
quick. For that stunt with the kids' parents alone, karma'd better have
something REALLY ugly in store for him.

As for Setsuna -- that scene earlier with him "seeing" the park blowing up
looks like an animator's attempt at showing PTSD to me. No surprise, given what
he's been through at his age. I'd expect Sousuke Sagara to have the same (hell,
even MEETING Gauron in real life would give me nightmares), except a) it really
doesn't fit with the tone of the series, and b) he's so twitchy and paranoid
ANYWAY that you probably couldn't tell...

He's a sympathetic character at least. Also seems to have more of a "something
to prove" streak than Heero, given the threat of getting fired (or just shot)
and all.

One other thing I noticed somewhere -- apparently the Virtue wasn't returned to
the Ptolemaios to _be_ recharged; it was sent back to recharge the Ptolemaios
from its own solar reactor. Interesting twist there...

I suspect you're right at least in part about Sumeragi's drinking. The same
thought occurred to me just yesterday. But I also wouldn't be surprised if the
"incident" in her past (the one alluded to in episode 6) is a part of what's
driven her to the bottle. I suspect that the unknown incident started it, and
her current work has continued it (and is possibly making it worse). Also, iirc
at least one of the bridge crew members (one of the guys that have only taken
up space so far) looked relieved that the rescue operation had been undertaken
in episode 5. So she may not be the only one with a conscience, though she's
certainly the most high ranking at the moment.

And the guy in the bridge crew has only had one or two brief lines to date.

I know it's hard to root for Setsuna right now, but I see him a lot like Heero
Yuy early on in Wing (albeit without the ability to jump from the 10th floor of
a building and survive the drop). Hopefully when he finally meets Marina in the
next episode it'll start the process of fixing the things that are wrong with
him emotionally.

To : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well, crap. On the one hand, it's good that there's
someone worse than CB out there, as it means we can actually start viewing them
as protagonists (though Tieria really needs to be stepped on, just like Ali).
But on the other...ugh, it's still such a goddamn mess. I'm interested to see
where it goes, but I really wish we had a main character we could root for
(Lockon and Allelujah, maybe, though they seem to be strictly support
characters ATM). On a related note...I'm betting Sumeragi's drinking stems from
the fact that she seems to be the only one in CB who has a conscience. Or at
least she seems to grasp the gravity of the organizations actions, and to be a
bit bothered by the body count. I could be reading too much into it, though.
