I completely agree with this. I will add that right now, I believe the best bang for the buck if you are doing compiling and running workloads that will be multi-threaded or use up multiple cores is the new AMD Phenom II X6 with a AM3 motherboard and about 8Gb of DDR3 RAM.
If you are wanting to play games, I would get a Intel Core i7 with Turbo Boost, and one generation old card from NVidia or ATI that was the highest end for its generation.
